How does one upmix 5.1 to 7.1? I have looked at eac3to and BeHappy, but neither of them seems to have an option for it.

That's complicated. To do it properly involves analysing all the channels and guessing which frequencies should be shifted to the back channels.

6.1 to 7.1 is just a matter of duplicating the back channel, a simple Stereo to 7.1 isn't that hard. 5.1 to 7.1 is rather more difficult.

I think a lot of receivers use THX Cinema or Dolby Pro Logic IIx (PLIIx) for that kind of conversion.

Because is unnecessary, any audio system 7.1 can do the job at play time.

When you recode always lose quality, even if your source 5.1 is lossless you finish with a lossy 7.1 with bigger size. For what do that?

Ndjamena, thanks for the info. Yes; 6.1 to 7.1 is easy.

Tebasuna, I know what I am doing and why. And I can recompress to DTS-HD MA and avoid lossy output. Thanks for your your help.

Try with Adobe Audition, to see if it's.

Nope, any upmix conversion is a lossy operation, because you can't recover the original lossless input exactly.

Oh, I know. It's just that I thought that you meant that lossy recompression was unavoidable.

GMJCZP, I don't have Adobe Audition, but I might look into it. Thanks.

It seems that the upshot is that none of the common freeware tools are configured with this upmix in mind. I suspected that this might be the case, but it's good to know for sure.

of cause they don't do stuff like that it's simply better to do it in real time so a proper 5.1 system doesn't have to down mix an up mixed 5.1 stream.

I know, but that doesn't relate to what I envisage. Thanks for your input.

Hi

What works brilliant is dts neural upmix 5.1 to 7.1 as vst Plugin or ProTools Plugin.

Very High Quality Professional Solution!

I made a few DTS HD 5.1 to 7.1 through Plogue Bidule and it works very good.

2.0 to 5.1 is not so nice compared with Waves Um226 ímho.

Ofcourse its not Freeware!
