View Full Version : Combining multiple MTS files into one with transitions

I have several videos I recorded with my camera in MTS format, never really heard of this format before but my PC seems to have no problem playing it.
Anyway, I want to combine these several videos into one, however, I also want to add a simple transition between them so the resulting video doesn't just jump from one clip to the next, such as a quick wipe left or similar.
Is there any simple and freeware application that can do this? Or would I need to use avisynth? Avisynth always confused me and I would like to try to finish this quickly, it always took me weeks to figure out an avisynth script.

That is not combining, that is editing.
Find yourself such a software (many camcorders provide the buyer a sort of lite editions of some renown companies).

If you don't have a lite version of anything, try OpenShot (http://www.openshot.org/), Lumiera (http://lumiera.org/), Blender (https://www.blender.org/), or Lightworks (http://www.editshare.com/products/lightworks) (which has the restriction that 1080p export isn't in the free version). They're all very capable NLEs, the first two designed to make it simple to do simple things and the others designed to have everything a video editing professional wants. You can also get a 30-day free trial of Adobe Premier, but that's huge.

What's the make and model of your camera/camcorder?

Sony DSC-RX100 Mark I
Yeah, it's more a photo camera than a camcorder, but it's what I had.
Funny thing, I DID figure out the AVS shortly after posting this... but, now that I have the AVS correctly set up... I can't seem to encode it.. MeGUI keeps crashing early into the encode with the error "avs4x264mod.exe has stopped working"

Nothing wrong with that. The Cybershot DSC-RX100 series compact/P&S cameras are capable of producing quite decent HD video - better than many in that class.
If it was a Canon AVCHD camcorder, which I have, I would have suggested using the bundled Pixela Video Browser software, which includes a basic editing utility for joining and trimming MTS clips, and adding transitions and titles. Nothing special, and a bit sluggish, but adequate. I think it only works with Canon MTS clips though, unfortunately.
Have you had a look at the Sony PlayMemories Home software that comes with the Cybershot cams, and can be downloaded for free. Looks to offer basic cutting/joining of AVCHD (MTS) clips. Can't see any mention of transitions in the 'effects' though.

Edit: If you don't mind spending a bit of cash, another "off the shelf " option to consider would be Pegasys's SmartRenderer 4 which, as the name suggests, does native 'smart rendering' of AVCHD MTS clips:

There are other native 'smart editors' out there (Video Splitter, VideoRedo, Smart Cutter) but, as far as I know, SmartRenderer 4 is the only one that offers transitions.

Well, since I already have it set up, I would like to try to encode this AVS itself if possible rather than installing another set of software applications and learning how to use them. When I load the AVS in MPC:HC it plays fine, edits and transitions and all. I just need to encode it now.

No problem.
Others on the forum would be better qualified to help you with the AVS/MeGUI issue.
Cheers.

I have tried EVERYTHING with the AVS and nothing seems to work in multiple encoding applications!
Any suggestions? I wouldn't mind installing a freeware video editor instead of using AVS, just as long as I can get this thing done. Thing is, most of the free ones are linux only, and I am on Windows.

Try Windows Movie Maker.

The avs4x264mod stopped working means one of the avisynth plugins crashed, which means it'll crash anything you try to encode it with. Can you post your script? We might be able to spot the problem.
