Setting up forced subtitles

Some commercial Blu-rays have a separate subtitles track that contains forced subtitles. Sometimes those subtitles are individually tagged as forced and sometimes they aren't.

Either way, a Blu-ray player still "knows" that it needs to display the forced subtitles.

I'm trying to understand how the player knows when the subtitles haven't actually been tagged as forced. I'm presuming there is a way of forcing the display of a given subtitles track but I don't know how or where that is done.

If they aren't 'forced' subtitles, then it's just done in programming. Forced subtitles you won't be able to turn off (unless you turn on another subtitle stream).

In programming, you just turn on 'Subtitle stream #6' when French audio is turned on (6 being the 'forced French subs' in this example). The user can still surf them off if they want to, or surf to them while English audio is active, etc... I think most studios use this technique.
