I am 99% certain this has to do with nVidia's YUV->RGB algorithm, for reasons I'll get into. Changing 'dynamic range' in the video color settings of NVIDIA Control Panel does absolutely nothing.
If I play a video in BD mode, blacks get boosted. You can actually see the moment, a fraction of the second, when the screen turns from black to dark gray.
I am using a plasma TV with HDMI, an Nvidia Geforce 750 Ti with the latest drivers. This is not a problem with color calibration. I've taken a picture of PDVD in maximized windowed mode to show two different kinds of black - the black bars on the top and bottom are part of the video, and the black bars to the left and right are software rendered. See the attachment 'wrong.jpg'. The important thing to notice is that the two kinds of 'black' are visibly different. They should be the same no matter how my screen is calibrated.
I have two copies of this disc - one retail, one a decrypted backup copy. Both can reproduce this problem in PDVD's BD mode.
However, on the decrypted disc, if I try to play the m2ts file directly, through PowerDVD in 'video' mode, the black does NOT get boosted. See the attachment 'right.jpg.' This isn't an acceptable solution, though.
Again, the 'dynamic range' video color setting seems to have no effect here. I can't use it to make video mode appear wrong any more than I can use it to make BD mode right.
I had this exact same problem before with VLC. VLC had a "hardware YUV->RGB" setting, and turning that off worked perfectly.
