View Full Version : Problems with an H264 stream that won't play smoothly

I've got a library of .ts streams I'd like to organise in iTunes without having to transcode or go via Handbrake, since I don't like the idea of re-encoding when it's already H264.

But the H264 within the streams looks to be incompatible with native Mac / Quicktime playback and iTunes import.

I've tried MP4Tools, iFFmpeg, Subler, VLC Export, iFlicks, IVI, several options under Wine, and many others.

Here's a link to a sample stream - can anyone tell me how I can create an iTunes compatible .m4v from it without transcoding?

I thought it might be a B-frame or Error Resilience issue, but haven't been able to get a smooth-playing file out of any software so far, unless I re-encode.

I've never been able to get iTunes or iDevices working well with any interlaced content. Were you successfully re-encoding to interlaced? That'd be surprising if it worked. If not, that explains why.

Yeah, I've never seen Apple decode interlaced H.264 outside of the FCP Pro Codecs. MPEG-2 was the last interlaced format even kind of playable in their consumer products, and even then not in iTunes or QuickTime.
