AVS-2 is looking very similar to HEVC, perhaps a bit more complex with its synthetic background reference frames, ALF filter etc.

Does anyone know where the reference software can be obtained?

Hi Pieter, I think the reference software is not officially available openly now. You need to log in to their ftp to download the reference source code.
