View Full Version : Video looks like bad deniterlacing?

Hello,

I have used srestore on the video but it only partially fixes the blending problem, I cannot see any interlacing so I do not know what else I can try to fix it.

I was going to upload a small sample, but as srestore fixes some of the blending but not all, I thought it best to upload the entire 1:48 minute clip - it is 72MB.

Here is the Clip (http://imagesinside.com/content/up/upload/avs/doom9/sg/soniccd_ed_000001E0.m2v)

You can forget about fixing that one because it was ruined by the idiot that had it before you. Unless the idiot was you. :)

This is from your source?

It is from the Gamecube version of Sonic Gems, I dumped via the my Wii and extracted the original .sfd video with Dolphin and demuxed with vgbtoolbox.

I assume those tools do not modify the video in any way.
So I guess the "idiot" that ruined it did so before placing it in the Sonic Gems game. :( I do not have the PS2 version of the game to see if that is any better.
The "Opening" version of the video does not suffer the same problem at least.

You captured this yourself? Does your capture program have a deinterlacer that can be turned on and off? It was badly deinterlaced, during capture, I would guess, or maybe elsewhere in the chain. Maybe you can go back and check your settings and recapture it if possible.

I assume those tools do not modify the video in any way.

If it doesn't look like that when playing it, I wouldn't make that assumption at all. It should be pretty easy to tell when playing.

I did not capture the video.
I extracted it from the game disc, as I do not own a capture device.

So whoever was responsible for encoding the video for the game, messed up real bad.

I checked the SegaCD disc, and aside from being a small resolution and perhaps not nearly as fluid with motion, it looked relatively clean as what I think may be a progressive source should.

So whoever produced this re-release, whatever source they used, screwed up pretty bad, or it is the extractor perhaps doing funny stuff.

Found a youtube compare where uploader said that could not find a GCN source without the "ghosting" problem. Which I assume he took to mean the frameblending.

Pretty shitty of them to call that a "remastered" ending. also worth noting the SegaCD version appears to be widescreen

Hmm.. so perhaps there is hope for the PS2 version!
I bought one on eBay yesterday, just got to wait for it to be delivered now.

Disc arrived today, the PS2 version video looks better in terms of blending but it is still there, and there is an odd flickering around edges too which I assume is also due to bad deinterlacing

yea looks like they used some sort of simple deinterlacing on it (Yadif / bob type?)

Not sure if that can really be fixed

Can you provide a little background on this Sonic CD ending video for those of us not familiar? The duration and content differs between your two files (apparently the GCN one has extra scenes).

It seems that for the first 31 seconds, they match duration if the PS2 video is played at 54 fps instead of the 30.000 fps that it's flagged at. I believe this rate change is why the GCN version has extra frame-blending.

The PS2 version contains something akin to "peculiar blending (http://avisynth.org.ru/docs/english/corefilters/peculiar.htm)". In this frame around a scene change, you can see the current frame's clean top, but the bottom is blended with the next frame.

http://i1.someimage.com/H3D66pa.png

In the vertical tracking shot beginning with frame 3990, the pattern looks like:

top 1 / bottom 1+2
entire 2+1
top 2 / bottom 2+3
top 3 / bottom 3+4
entire 4+3
top 4 / bottom 4+5
entire 5+4
top 5 / bottom 5+6
entire 6+5
top 6 / bottom 6+7
entire 7+6
top 7 / bottom 7+8
top 8 / bottom 8+9
... and then I got bored counting.

I'm not aware of any way to completely fix such a messed up sequence, but if nothing else you should be able to get clean tops for every frame, if you were willing to put in a lot of manual effort.

The aliasing can be cleaned up by re-interlacing and then deinterlacing; here I used QTGMC with defaults -- this smooths things somewhat so you may want to try different settings. And AssumeTFF looks better than my AssumeBFF on some parts of some frames... it's weird. So I dunno what to suggest there.

PS2 = MPEG2Source("ENDING2_1_000001E0.d2v")
PS2 = PS2.ColorYUV(gain_y=20,cont_u=100,cont_v=100) #roughly match contrast and saturation to GCN (I used scopes to help find the values)
PS2 = PS2.LanczosResize(PS2.width,PS2.height-8).AddBorders(0,4,0,4,color_white) #match size to GCN with obvious borders
PS2.AssumeBFF().SeparateFields().SelectEvery(4,0,3).Weave().QTGMC()

Here's a frame that happened to be relatively free of blending on both. The GCN appears to have a little bit of interlacing on the right side where the outline of the dissipating dust cloud is faintly visible. Ultimately, the GCN video is more detailed on frames that aren't blended, no matter what you do to the PS2 one.

GCN -vs- PS2 with only ColorYUV -vs- PS2 entire script

ChiDragon nice!
It is weird but I did not notice that there was extra content in the Gamecube version, but then I was only trying to "fix" the video first.

Your script is definitely something I would never have thought of doing. (Plus I did not know you could use a resizer without inputting exact dimensions.)

I guess there is no such thing as a clean version of this video outside of the studio which produced it, even the Steam version of Sonic CD's ending video is blended.
