I was simply curious to see how the population on this forum is spread out geographically. It seems the US are underrepresented compared to Europe, and as for the rest of the world, I wonder how much DVD ripping has penetrated there.

cool idea however, what about an option for Australia/Oceania? (hmmm, i guess this is just the result of living on the a** end of the planet :) )

-h
16th February 2002, 17:18
Yeah, gimme Australia.

I live in the US, and have already voted, but I can't believe you left off an entire continent, esp. one that is populated (leaving Antartica off the list is understandable-albeit not thorough)...

Great idea, but add Australia-I think some of the heavy-hitters in here (like -h) are from that part of the world, and they would probably like to be counted...

the whole oceania is there now (is that the right term btw?)

But oh well, keep voting. :)

blah
Im from poland
what should i chose ?
other countries ?

damn
when will ppl stop divide europ for "normal" and "eastern" ?
theres one europe!
and why are germany france and uk separate ??
are these countires any better or special ?

very stupid vote :( :( :(

ppera2
17th February 2002, 15:27
I must tell that this segregation of Europe is at least very stupid.
What are that 3 'big' countries so special ?
Why not Scandinavia as choice, why not Balkan ? Why not Lichtenstein ?

Doom9
17th February 2002, 15:27
poland qualifies as eastern europe I would say. Why stupid poll? Germany, France and the UK are the biggest EU countries, and from my server logs I can already tell that there's much more people from these countries than from poland. I don't think anybody would want to slighten any country. The distinction between eastern europe and western europe is just a geographic one. It's pretty much the same as east coast and west coast in the US..
and the disctinction between EU and non EU countries in Europe is a political one. You know I don't like to discuss my location, but those of you who know where I'm from can tell you that I might just have my own objections to this poll, and you can't list every country after all, can you? It always is a compromise.

ppera2
17th February 2002, 17:23
Italy is almost same big as France or UK.

Olebrumm71
18th February 2002, 10:02
Actually the poll is "incomplete".

I for instance live in Norway and can therefore not make a correct vote in the poll, simply because NONE of the categories are correct for me.

'Other EU countries' does NOT apply to Norway, since Norway is not part of the European Union.

Makes me wonder about the origin of the person who created the categories in the poll in the first place....

As you guys may or may not know, there is a maximum of 10 options on polls. You just have to draw a line somewhere! As doom said, the UK and Germany are not only among the biggest European countries, but also some of the most represented on the forum. (Doom, I'm sorry, but your country isn't exactly a massively populated superpower. Can't list everything.)

And it's just a geographical separation between Eastern Europe and Western Europe. I never meant by putting "Other EU countries" that they were somehow superior to non-EU European countries. I only put that because I thought it was clearer than saying "other Western European countries". Although I guess I should have: I am guilty as charged about this omitting Switzerland and Norway, which I didn't think of.

ppera, those countries aren't special, but again, you have to draw a line. I think I'm right when I say there are more Germans than Yugoslavians here, right? And maybe it will end stupid East - West debates when I say I'm Romanian? Of course I want my country to become more integrated with the EU and Western Europe, but that doesn't mean that we should deny any differences!

And maybe I should have separated Asia too, because it's so big? I'm sure the Indians and Pakistani, or the Indonesians and those from East Timor would be offended by the mere thought that they're in the same geographical region? Lighten up, people. Either way I would've done this I would've offended somebody.

I agree with rmatei, come on guys stop this kind of jealousy, we're no little kids here !!

@Olebrumm71:

What a stupid argument! Norway is part of europe. This poll has nothing to do with any membership of the EU. This poll is intended for locations and nothing else. So what you're saying is, when they created the EU they just shrunk the continent, huh?!?

It should go without saying that in this poll EU = Europe as a continent, not as the Union.

(By the way, Spain is pretty big too).

well, let me put the nose here......
i see that a simple statistic poolcan be the origin to many polemics
but
world is strange
e.g. oceania is a continent, but has half the population of spain
africa is too,and more than 600millions there, but i bet ppl from swiss is more........
israel IS in the middle east, but,as hamas says, should be took off....
and what about the country of Napoleon??????
China has 60 times the population of oceania, but isnt here, and if were here i guess very few ppl from there.
japan is not as big as china, but has as many ppl as germany+france, and i bet there are more japanese than french here, and it is always the most advanced country in the world....

to conclude, i just wanted to know one thing.......
that is......

BUT REALLY OOKAMI ISNT FROM JAPAN ????? :D

French people don't really like to speak in english, of course there are some exception (like me and my sucking english :p ).
French scene is pretty big, but the German's one also !!

Gren

well, here's an interesting point for all the people on the other side of the planet -
Oceania is not a continent - it is the term used to refer to Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and all other surrounding countries (I think as far as Fiji).

Whilst on the subjects of continents, Australia is a continent - land mass wise - not population wise. Yes the people to land ratio is like one person for every 600 square metres so we all have very big yards (front yard and back yard - jealous? well try doing the lawn :) )

and i think every one should quit there bitchin about this poll - oh i think this country should be on its own and how come france/uk/germany are on there own?! it's because there are heaps of people there!

...Europe Ununited as we can easily see in these posts.
Someone was talking abut Napoleon, well he used to say: Divide to conquer! Thats very obvious, it's still working and gets the job done, like my Artificial Inteligence teachers were always praying.

Were it not for this and we could see how the USA and Canada were misrepresented (not to say ass kicked) in this poll...
Yes gentlemen, war as been declared! :) :)

By the way the European union is now refered to as CE, formerly known as CEE, not EU, as someone as also put it (rmatei I believe).

For someone that is nitpicking you have very little knowledge about geography (or just reading the word after "Location"). Or do you support... Oops. I almost got into politics.

In short... In my case you should write (if you want that your joke is correct):

"Yeah... when it would be 'Croatia until Tokio' :D ."

Whatever...

All the best,

Ookie.

Yes, I nitpicking because I don't like how poll author divided it - not just for Europe.

Correctness ? Support... I know what you thought. Do you think that such person would put such joke here ?

Fact is that I myself thought first time you (Ookami) is Jap.. until looked little left :p .

"How the F*** did you work that out?" - Pythagoras, 126 B.C.

Oceania IS a continent, Aus is a country
Oceania includes also New Zeland( that isnt in asia or america...),Tasman and many pacific isles
dont think Papua New Guinea, that should be included in Asia.

Pythagoras lived around 500 bc !

and....i forgot a very very important thing!

rmatei, SEE TO INCLUDE THE STATE OF VATICAN IN YOUR LIST, would be better for your healt..........

Gren

australia is the world's smallest continent (greenland is the world's largest island)

asia
north america
south america
europe
antarctica
australia

those are the world's continents - just consult any geography book pulished after Captain Cook and it will say that.

further proof:
"....officially Commonwealth of Australia, the smallest continent and one of the largest countries on Earth...."
Encyclopaedia Britanica Article
http://www.britannica.com/eb/article?eu=119613&tocid=0&query=world%27s%20smallest%20continent

also with regard to oceania:
"..collective name for the islands scattered throughout most of the Pacific Ocean. The term, in its widest sense, embraces the entire insular region between Asia and the Americas."
Encyclopaedia Britanica Article
http://www.britannica.com/eb/article?eu=58114&tocid=0&query=oceania

with regards to the pythagoras thing - yes well it's a shame for a mathematician to admit but i can't remember when pythagoras was around however, i do agree with u - 126 BC sounds off

so, in conclusion let me just say:
Australia is a continent AND a country, oceania is neither and we won Gold in the 1000m Men's Speed Skating in True Blue fashion (fair and square). :D

Sorry if you feel insulted in some way.
I just wanted to point that you are from country neighbour to Serbia.
But it looks that it was too hard even for you, who knows region. Actually it should insult those people who had such ideology - we all know what are results of all it. I could write lot about it, of course it's not the place.

I don't see that I wrote something against forum rulez, if you don't think that complaining against poll's way is that.

This poll showed us how people is very sensitive about nationality/geographic things. And unfortunatelly also how people badly know geography.

And I expected more vote from East Europe

@gren

It seems that some political interests had forced the change of status of your country. In any gegraphical atlas printed at least before 1988 (that was my last contact with a gegraphical atlas:D )Australia IS a big ISLAND which belongs to a continent called OCEANIA. Even the very popular game of strategy called "war" uses this definition.

As far as I can see, the definition of a Continent is vague, inprecise and plenty of political interventions.
For example: Why north america, central america and south america aren't only one continent (which should be called just "america")? Why europe + asia instead of just "eurasia"?

btw:Where is "africa" in your list of continents?

Ookami
22nd February 2002, 21:09
Er, it seems that I have reacted too sensible, but it isn't hard to act too sensible after all that happened in this area...

No need to apologize, I've misunderstood the purpose of your post and because of that I pointed to you the rule 2 and 4. I apologize that you felt for apologizing, LOL .

This is really not the place to talk about politics (aside that I don't like to talk about it on the net).

To the eastern Europe thingy :D . Well, it shows that most of the people don't like to be in it ;) . Altough I put my vote there :) .

Now I'm going to watch some hockey, wohooo...

Cheers,

Mijo.

@Mozart

yes mozart - i can see your point. i too at first doubted that australia was a continent & a country (how can this be?) but i just succumbed to what i was taught. after doing geography for the past five years, countless assignments and just general reading - i believe that Australia is now considered a continent/country. Also from what i have seen, Oceania is popularly used to refer to the countries and islands from Asia to America.

With regards to Africa, yes my bad - pobody's nerfect :D

BTW, why isn't there a Western US and Eastern US, huh? Slighting Europeans like that but not Americans? Damn pollsters.....
