I've had a problem accessing the forums the last two weeks with Google Chrome. I never had a problem before except for the times that the forum was down. I found out yesterday that if I hit the close button (X) while the page is loading (after about ten seconds) that the forum page will open. This happens to every single forum page that I try to open, including posting in threads.
I've tried other Doom9 pages (guides etc...) and most of them open but every single forum page that I try to open has this issue. I updated the Chrome browser to the latest build but the problem it did not help.
I have no problem with Pale Moon but I use it without cookies for most of my surfing and use Chrome for sites where I have to have cookies on like forums or online banking.
I do not have this problem with any other website or with other Doom9 pages, just with pages that start with forum.doom9.org.

@DarrellS, try CCleaner and do a cleanup of all your browsers.

I'm using portable version Version 41.0.2272.101
have this warning in about: Update failed (error: 1)
I'll check portableapps.com and see if there is an update or download the old version and see if it fixes the issue.
This is from the portableapps website...
Google Chrome Portable 41.0.2272.101 Rev 3 Stable has been released. This release works around bugs in XP and Vista. It's packaged as a portable app, so you can take your browsing experience with you and it's in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Platform. It's partially open source freeware for personal and business use.
Rev 3: A build error occurred in the Rev 2 release. Rev 3 fixes that issue. Our apologies.
Browsers (and other software) have problems updating portable versions since they don't know where you have the portable version stored. Pale Moon asks me where the exe file is stored so they can update the browser successfuly.
I'll try updating manually and posts my result. Thanks!
EDIT: I had to use the stop button to load the site but when I posted this message, it posted with no problem and looks like it will post this edit with no problem. Weird

I've tried five or six browsers and I can not access the Doom9 forums with any of them. The only way I can access the Doom9 forums is to hit the stop button in Google Chrome after 10 seconds. That goes for every single link on the forums site.
I have no problem with any other link on the Doom9 site, just the forums. I used CCleaner as advised above and I've tried accessing from the address bar instead of my bookmark. I have no idea what the deal is unless I have a Doom9 virus. I've had warnings from the forums on many occasions stating that this was a dangerous site and asking if I was sure I wanted to access it. If I was having problems with other websites or with just one browser, I would think it was on my end but it seems like the site is trying to block my access.

Google Chrome likes to call every site a virus.
Because of a few incidents, they automate a process to blacklist the slightest thing that goes wrong. SourceForge is blacklisted on Google Chrome unless you click through everything to get it to work.
Other forums will use ads to generate revenue to pay for the forum and often have no real control over what ads will be used, thus ending up with malicious ads through no fault of their own.
In the Chrome settings, try go to Advanced (expand) and disable all but 1 or 2 of these settings...

Most of those don't really help at all.
The last option "Do Not Track" may break certain websites functionality. No certain way to know.
Make sure in CCleaner that "DNS cache" is checked for cleaning.
And you could try CCEnhancer to add more options for cleaning and everything for Chrome and Firefox.
There's one option in the newly added lists from CCEnhancer that wipe preferences for Google Chrome extensions and can't remembe which so you'll have to set options for those plugins again after cleaning (or figure out the option and disable that).
You could also using a different DNS service like "OpenDNS" instead of the default in your OS (or Google's).
It's free and easy to set up. https://www.opendns.com/
Firefox doesn't really have options like those. But disable most that would otherwise just slow down FF for the extra services.
All "Data Choices" options can be disabled.
Try disabling your add-ons for Chrome, since there isn't much going on at Doom9, anyhow.
One of them could be outdated plugins.
If you're really paranoid about disabling your plugins, get the free version of Malwarebyte's Anti-Exploit as it greatly reduces exploits in vulnerabilities in web browsing (chrome and firefox supported).

I'm using those settings in Chrome. I turned off all extensions and I chose the DNS cache in CCleaner. Turned off Avast. I ran malwarebytes before but I'll try it again.
Chrome is the only browser that I can get the forums to open but I have to hit the stop button before it will show the page.
I thought I had Chrome fixed after updating it the other day but it broke the next time I tried to access the forums.

Anti-malware and Anti-exploit are mutually exclusive programs.
This also is not meant to do an active scan but rather just operate in the background (live-protection).
but I have to hit the stop button before it will show the page.
I was aware of that being the previous condition, but after changing everything, did the condition change to enter the forum?
Try a hard power cycle of your modem/router and PC.
Also, are you accessing from your home connection or using something else like open wi-fi or at work?
You could try reset your winsock.
Open CMD (with Administrative privileges) and enter:
netsh winsock reset
Then reboot your PC for changes to take effect.

Uninstalled Chrome and re-installed. Googled for problem and this link showed up so I clicked the link and got this message...
Your connection is not private. Attackers might be trying to steal your information from www.doom9.org (for example; passwords, messages or credit cards. This server could not prove that it is doom9.org; it's security certificate is not trusted by your computer's operating system. This may be caused by a misconfiguration or an attacker intercepting your connection.

This is normal if you try to access doom9 through https. Unlike your bank the doom9 admins did not get the server certificate signed by a certificate authority (like VeriSign). Signing involves some work and often money and the doom9 admins don't feel it's worth the hassle. The message means that despite the connection being encrypted it cannot be guaranteed you are actually talking to the doom9 server and not some hacker pretending to be doom9. Browsers show big warnings in these cases although the connection is still more secure than the http most sites use. They simply assume http = unimportant (no warning), https = important (check if signed by authority).

And the first thing todo:
Check your computer time and date.
I've seen many time a misfunction of the security policies because of wrong timings.
Just my two cents....

I thought may be the security certificate, too, but OP specified only HTTP and not HTTPS so I left that out.
I normally don't browse doom9 with HTTPS, only whenever I do custom google searches and results give back HTTPS links, then I just remove the S and browse the results under normal HTTP.

It's both http and https and it's every single browser that I've tried. By looking at the other thread in this section it seems that I'm not the only one having issues.
Avery shut down the Virtualdub forums because it's too much work trying to block all the spammers and I heard that Doom10 has closed their doors also. fcchandler was sited the other day and stated...
"I am still alive but it's a long story. November 2012 my website was hacked and my ISP called me on the telephone at home to tell me that I was hosting malicious software! Nothing like that had ever happened to me before. They took the site down and ever since then I've been too timid to revive it. I just decided to lay low for a while. Then "a while" became years and well, here we are."
Now the way this forum is acting, it seems it is about to close also.
Videohelp is about the only reliable Video Forum left.
The one thing that I haven't mentioned is that the issues did not exist when I was using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 but I upgraded to SP1 a couple of weeks ago. I had been trying to do it for months but it every time I tried to install it, it would get to 100% complete and then say it failed. A couple of programs that I really wanted to try insisted that I have SP1 because my OS was outdated and not supported (go figure).

C'mon Darrell
Dont build your mind on assumptions.
Just because your OS is burked, don't blame the website holders.
Maybe some long forgotten ISP blocker is doing it's work.
Some long overdue firewall rules.
Maybe your ISP is doing some nasty things now.
And your last sentences clearly show that something is in the bush.
Why not make a clean install with the service pack included and try it?
Win7 has image backup functionality build-in.
So switching back to a former working environment
is just depending on how much diskspace to save.
Just some thoughts....

DarrellS, try this:
- Clean with CCleaner, but this time in the "Applications" tab mark everything about Chrome.
- Now download AdwCleaner and do a scan.
- If still not working install SUPERAntiSpyware and passes a full scan.
- Clean the registry with CCleaner.

Resetting the winsock is supposed to help with Windows Updates.
Use CCEnhancer (https://singularlabs.com/software/ccenhancer/), it adds a lot more options to clean out.
Tick everything under CCleaner > Applications > (scroll down) > Windows.
It'll take a couple minutes to start CCleaner the first time (on HDD, SSD around 5-10 seconds).
After use CCEnhancer to "Trim" the .ini file so it's faster to start CCleaner each time.
Clean out all Windows sections, this should clear out any Windows updates that may be corrupt.
Do a registry clean.
Then reset the winsock so Windows Updates will work better:
netsh winsock reset
You can google about resetting the winsock.
I googled "power cycle router" and found this article to be short and sweet while all others had too much clutter.

It sounds like the problem goes a lot deeper than the browser. My guess is that your DNS is all messed up, or maybe the general connection between you and the Doom9 server. (Which is hosted in Denmark, IIRC.)
For DNS, you can test by using nslookup or DNS Lookup (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/dns_records_viewer.html). The Nirsoft tool is handy since you can easily clear the cache, too. Try setting your system's DNS to 8.8.8.8 (Google) or 208.67.222.222 (OpenDNS) instead of your automatic ISP/Router provided one if that's the problem.
To check the general connection, run an endless ping, like ping -t -l 1400 www.doom9.org If there are failures, some kind of routing problem exists, and the only way to fix it is to wait for your ISP to resolve the problem or use a proxy server or VPN to reroute your traffic.

About the time that I started having issues. my satellite internet carrier said that I had already used my 15 GB of bandwidth in 6 days (possible but since I do most of my surfing at night during the free bandwidth hours, not likely) so I ended up buying more bandwidth. I got rid of Chrome since I have no privacy using their browser and am now using Pale Moon and Seamonkey at night.
First, I couldn't access doom9 at all but I added an s after http and was met by the warning that I used to get when I used Firefox, warning me of the unsafe website but allowing me to set an exception and interring at my own risk. Whala, doom9.
There is a red bar with a preferences button but I have no idea what to set. Something to do with Secure Socket Layer.
