View Full Version : DV Cam folks, try this for audio > 2 gig

There is a new test version in this thread that supports audio in DV files > 2 gig. I did a 13 gig file with no problem.

I tried the Beta3 release on a DV-file (Mainconcept codec used), which is greater than 2 Gig. Unfortunatly the extracted WAV-file had a duration of about 3 mins whereas the original video had a duration of nearly 10 mins. Only short parts (about 1/3rd) of the audio are converted. Of course the encoded MP2 and multiplexed MPG file had the same problem.

Can you try again. I know this sounds dumb, but make sure you copied the new executable correctly (sorry :) ) The audio extraction works well for me so let's try to figure it out.

See the AviHints tab and download the Canopus codec and then check the box about "Convert DV AVI to Canopus" in the misc tab. All it does it patch the header. This will let D2S know if it is just something to do with the MC codec.

Hello DDogg. This is what I did:
* Downloaded the latste Canopus DV-codec
* Downloaded the Canopus file converter to conver a MS DV-avi into a Canopus DV-avi.
* Installed the codec and file conversion program
* Deinstalled DVD2SVCD
* Reinstalled DVD2SVCD 1.0.6 Build 4
* Copied the exe from DVD2SVCD107BETATMPGEnc3.zip
* Rebooted the system
* Converted a MS DV-avi with the file converter to a Premiere compatible Canopus AVI (AVI2)
* Converted the converted Canopus DV-avi with DVD2SVCD.

The audio problem still exists. So I don't think it has anything to do
with the Mainconcept codec. I played both (MS and Canopus) DV-files with the Mediaplayer and PowerDVD and there are no audio problems (Just to be sure...). Converting the DV-file using TMPGenc 2.51 or 2.52 results in a correct MPG file with no audio or video problems.

I'm using the following hardware:
Athlon Thunderbird 700 MHz slot A (not overclocked!)
Abit KA7-100
640 Megabytes 133 Mhz SDRAM (one stick of 128 Meg and one of 512 Meg)
Using Windows 2000 Professional Dutch edition
I never had any lock-up or failure problems with DVD2SVCD and CCE.

If you or DVD2SVCD need some additional information then please let me know.
Regards,

R23

I tried the beta3 from the thread posted above and got messed up audio also.

I just d/led the canopus codec/changer
software and will try those later (although from Okar's post, it does not sound hopeful)

Actually don't use the convertor. Just install the codec and check the box in dvd2svcd about canopus. It is in the misc tab but will not become active until you intall the canopus demo playback codec.

Okar Gona

I'll try this tomorrow. Currently I'm running a batch encode in TMPGenc :D and I don't wan't to reinstall the Canopus codec as long as TMPGenc is active...

R23

ah, ok.
I will try the original dv avi (not the converted one - which I did just try with the same out of sync and too short audio) with the choice under 'Misc' checked.

Hi,
while converting from AVI (< 2 GB: only 3 min dv Camera file!!) the audio is only for a small part encoded.
Tried CCE 2.50 and TMPEGEnc 2.51 with and without avi2wav, different bitrates wih and without canopus codec
but of no avail

*** made many svcd's with this program and also converted avi's to svcd manually

thanxs in advance

I upgraded my 1.06 b4 ver to 1.07 b7 pre16 off the link above in order to try and get audio in my dv encodes to work. When I encoded the 8.5 gig file with 1.06 b4 the video came out great but no sound. With 1.07 b7 pre16 there is sound and video but the sound is out of sync. The sample was created in premiere converted to avi2 using the canopus codec and converter.

This is weird. It worked flawlessly for me. Hmmm, I had a special test build. I assume nothing got broken in subsequent builds, but will check as soon as all the TMPG testing gives me a chance.

It seems that only Microsofts DV AVI2 is supported. So please use Canopus Converter to convert it to MS DV AVI2.

I don't understand this as I was using the mainconcept codec (I think). .......HEY, everybody is using type 2 DV for their capture, aren't they?

Okar Gona
18th February 2002, 21:02
As far as I know I'm only using the Microsoft DV-codec type 2. I'll always capture with premiere 6.01 und win2k with NTFS filesystem. My edited DV-movies, most of them are greater than 4 gig, play fine with Mediaplayer and also with PowerDVD.

18th February 2002, 21:05
Ya, I also rip from premiere using the default ms codec and then i used the canopus codec and converter to make it avi2. If anyone wants me to test it again a certain way let me know. I love this app and its so close to helping me make great svcds of my home movies too.

DDogg
18th February 2002, 21:17
Okar Gona, do you have that silly MS movie thing on your machine? If so can you do a capture with it and try that as source? I got a goofy idea.

Okar Gona
18th February 2002, 22:06
What did I do.

I used DVCAP from Mainactor to capture a small DV clip of around 51 seconds (sorry DDogg I couldn't find that MS movie thing). Encoding this in DVD2SVCD results in a correct WAV of 51 seconds. :)

Then I loaded the DV-clip in premiere. The project setting in Premiere showed that the file was captured with Mainactor codec 2.04. Then I exported the movie with the Microsoft codec. Audio in the created DV-file was OK. Encoding the generated file resulted in a "broken-up" WAV of only 13 seconds. But I don't know why. :stupid:

Another remark to people who had installed the Mainactor DV codec and deinstalled it. Verify in your registry setting which codec is used in playing DV-files.

If in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32 shows "vidc.dvsd"="mcdvd_32.dll"
then you are stil using the mainactor codec for playing DV-files!

If in the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32 shows "vidc.dvsd"="qdvd.dll"
the you are using the Microsoft codec.
Remark: These settings are for win2k.

If the mainactor codec is being used then CCE can convert the DV-file, on the other hand if the Microsoft codec is used CCE will crash. The same is also true for TMPGenc. I made two registry files to select which codec I want to use for reading my DV-files. If you have captured the DV-files in premiere with the Microsoft codec then you should select also the Microsoft codec for reading the DV-file. Otherwise premiere "thinks" they are Mainactor files and starts re-encoding them again when exporting the movie.

I hope this helps.

I just want to confirm that with the latest DVD2SVCD version (1.07) all the audio problems with DV-files are solved.

Great work DVD2SVCD, finally I can use DVD2SVCD for converting my DV-files!

This week I'll make another donation.

Nice, got a perfectly encoded christmas 2001 video to hand out to family members now. The sound issue was completely fixed in 1.07b1. Now that thats taken care of, what settings have you fellow dv encoders found to be the best for avi2svcd? I found the avi2svd reference roughdraft at http://www.edensrising.com/dvd2svcd/dvd2svcd_avi2svcdref.html and it had a few suggestions, but i thought that everyone who has tried their own testing could post the settings they found the best for dv video.

ok, maybe i spoke too soon, just discovered an odd problem. I had watched the mpeg on my pc and the sound was fine. But when i burned the bin and watched the vid on the tv/dvd player the sound was sped up. Everyone was talking like a chipmunk ;). Anyone have any ideas on that?

hmm, mine was fine on my pioneer dvd player. Mine was only about 20 minutes long. The audio was fine through the whole 20 minutes.
