View Full Version : Avidemux: Is it possible to index file types other than just mpg

Hey all,

I've been looking around for an answer to this, but haven't found anything yet. Maybe someone here can help.

When I open an MPEG file with avidemux, it pops up a dialog asking if I want to build an index, which it stores in a file. Once built, I can scroll really smoothly through the video and everything, and I love it.

Unfortunately, it does not give me that option for other file types (e.g. mp4), and so I can only scroll in too-large chunks (1-10 second intervals), or frame-by-frame, neither of which is appealing.

Is there a way to force it to build a proper index for all file types, or is MPEG somehow special? I don't see any obvious menu items (like "Video -> Build Awesome Index" hehe).

Since I can always go frame by frame, it would stand to reason that it should be able to index anything in the same manner.

Thanks much!

Use a newer version. The 2.6.x branch can scrub frame by frame with h.264/mp4

However, you can still only cut on GOP boundaries if you are using stream copy

Ah, thanks, I installed the 2.6 version from their repositories. Looks like Ubuntu stable still has the old 2.5.4 version.

It seems to work a little better, but still skipping multiple seconds on mp4. wmv seems to work well half the time, and just crash avidemux the other half (though IIRC it was always super-flaky on wmv).

It works ok on Windows for h.264/MP4. Avidemux 2.6.8. Maybe something wrong with the linux version or something specific to your file ?

Oh yeah it's definitely the file. I have a bunch of WMVs, and it's all the same ones causing the crash. The others work fine. It's no biggie. Thanks for the help!
