I really don't know where to ask this . . . What is the purpose of having to answer a random question when I try to make a post? I am pretty new to this stuff and really don't know the answers. Sometimes I don't even understand what the question means.

The purpose is to make it more difficult for the spam bots and thus keep the amount of spam low ;)

Well I guess it was a good idea but for users like me it makes things much more difficult.

Thanks.

There's always a trade-off between making the questions enough challenging to keep the bots out (bots are quite sophisticated these days!) and not affecting the genuine users too much.

Note that Spam has been serious problem for this board some time ago. And these questions have fixed it to a large extent. Also the questions should be pretty easy to answer for video encoding enthusiasts.

If you have problems answering a particular question, I think you can just try again. Since questions should be random, you should get a different one next time...

I never got any questions. Is this for new users only?

Yeah I also get the questions during my first 5 or 10 posts.
One question was "name a moderator of forum xxx" where xxx was a forum with no moderator listed.
That was a good joke.

Well I just made my 6th post (elsewhere) and the random question requirement has disappeared. I didn't know it wouldn't very last long, I had thought that these forums were going to be hard to deal with but . . . hats off to the guy who dreamed up a good method to eliminate the spammers etc!!

Cheers . . .

The saddening truth is, the "hard-core" spammers have INFINITE patience, just like their father, the Devil
They may "do nothing" during months and even years, until they decide it's the right time for their first-and-last spam post on a chosen board. ;)
