View Full Version : QuEnc Problems

A few months back I tried DVD Rebuilder for the first time. I decided on QuEnc based on the descriptions at http://info.dvd-rb.com/. After 2 hours of crunching, my 5 Gig movie came in at 2.31 Gig. I was disappointed and I deleted it and went back to DVD Shrink. Last week I decided to give it a second try on another movie and again I got a 2.31 Gig result. I did some reading and found the Targetsectors=xxxx option so tried using that. Again I got 2.31 Gig. I doubled the Targetsectors setting (high enough now for a DVD9) and again got 2.31 Gig.
Before giving up again I tried using HC Encoder and all of sudden I got 4.31 Gig.
Is there a problem with QuEnc? I am only using the versions of each encoder that were automatically installed by DVD Rebuilder.

QuEnc is old and isn't really a viable option anymore, although I haven't personally had any sizing issues (admittedly I haven't used it in a long time). HC Encoder will give you far superior results. In fact it is on-par with the (expensive) CCE encoder. You'll see much better results on significant reductions with HC than you would with Shrink. But you probably wouldn't notice much when only shrinking from 5GB down to 4.31GB.

Thanks for your reply. Being new to DVD-Rebuilder and video encoders I only chose QuEnc based on what I read in the download section on your web site. Possibly that hasn't been updated in some time. Although it may be old, is it normal to get a result which is 2 Gig undersized with QuEnc or could I have made some mistake in how I used the program?

I'll run a test on a disc and see if I get the same result.

I just ran a couple of jobs using QuEnc as the encoder -- and they both came out to 4.28GB.

Go figure, eh? I've done 6 on 2 different movies and all were 2.31 Gig. I've run 3 using HC Encoder since you suggested it and the same movies have come out 4.31 Gig. Let's not waste time on this. If you say HC Encoder gives better results then I' happy to abandon QuEnc and just get on with it.
Regardless, I am impressed with both DVD and BD Rebuilder as well as your dedication to personal support for both here in these forums. You deserve my $upport too . . . coming shortly.

I just did another one. It was 4.30GB. But I'd still recommend HC Encoder. The only other encoders I'd recommend is either CCE or Procoder -- but their both expensive and are roughly equivalent to HC Encoder.

Do you advise to update the HC component in DVD Rebuilder to a new version?

I looked at it, and I didn't see anything in the changes that would affect DVD-RB. So I'm not sure it would make any difference. I also haven't tested it.
