Not using DXVA

Hi there,

new PC, new luck I thought and tried enabling usage of DXVA. And well, I succeeded—but only partially.

So pressing Ctrl+J for a selection of movies it tells me "DXVA2: H.264 bitstream decoder, ClearVideo, [LAV Video Decoder (DXVA2 Native)]". For other movies in the same container (MKV) and same format (AVC) it says "Not using DXVA". What is common to the last group is, that they’re wider than 1600 (which is my screen resolution). If a movie is less than 1600 wide DXVA will be used.

So can this be the reason? Can I get around it?

Hardware: Intel E5400, Chipset: Intel Q45
Software: Windows 8.1 Pro, MPC-HC 1.7.7.157, LAV 0.63, Renderer EVR-CP

Q45? GMA 4500? It should never have any h264 decoding ability...

H.264 support was a late addition to ClearVideo (https://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2009/03/15/intel-clear-video-and-h264avc), but you takes what you can gets. It's a hybrid hardware/software decoder. You're probably running into a graphics memory limit, where a combination of too large and too many reference frames overflows the available memory.

Oh ok. I didn’t know the support ist incomplete. I imagine it to be the same way it’s for H.265 in Broadwell.

Graphics memory might be it. Well, I know it’s a rather old system but was a bargain and is still superior to my old one.
