Do I really need a dvd ripper? Can't I just copy the vob files off the disk onto my hard drive?

Yeah, it's a silly question, but I've just followed the GKNOT rules so far and had success - now I'm just wondering what the RIPPER actually does? Vob files on my HD are the same as on the disk??

Not an urgent question, ... just curious.

(stuck in the newbie forum to hide among all the other basic questions!) :D :D

Unless you have an unencrypted DVD you need a ripper - they decrypt the DVD allowing you use the files, (try copying the vobs off the DVD with windows - if it is encrypted it should say it is going to take ~63 years or some other ridiculous amount of time)
This WAS the entire issue with DVD's, one cannot copy them because they are encrypted.

It is pretty incredible that now (after all the rippers) the easiest step in ripping a DVD is the decryption, and people ripping DVD's don't even know they are encrypted (I bet that would piss off the MPAA). :D

VOBs on DVDs are encrypted with CSS so that they can't be read without a special license. Rippers copy the file and at the same time remove the encryption.
