Help me find a correct aspect ratio

Hi,

so I wanted to encode a music video. At the end of the video it says it was "filmed with Panavision Cameras and Lenses".

A quick research reveals that their cameras have MAX aspect ratio of 2.35/2.40:1

So I've used 2.40:1 aspect ratio which is 1920x800. However the aspect ratio still didnt look right to me.

I then tried a 2.55:1 aspect ratio (1920x752) and it looked better. However- I was still quite unsure, it still didnt look right enough for me.

So I went down to 2.66 aspect ratio (1920x720), which is really uncommon for movie cameras and this seems to be the correct aspect ratio.

What do you guys think, here are the screenshots. What is the correct AR in your oppinion?

Did you try to find a circle as a reference in the clip? A circle may be found in the credits as a logo.
Otherwise take the AR which you like most. It could well be 2.66666:1, although it is not quite common.

Essentially, the 'movie' aspect ratio can be anything that the 'director/producer/paymaster' wants to see.

Several years ago a friend of mine shot a commercial in the UK for CocaCola that was around 3:1. Sadly, this was back in the day when the majority of peoples TV screens were still CRT's, so its impact was totally lost. It looked pretty good at the cinema though ;)

Over here in the UK, BBC2 are currently showing 'How The West Was Won' in its fully restored 2.89:1 glory. It looks incredible on my 60" plasma :)

Yeah I found a circle and tested with the circle and it seems that the video is 2.66:1 ;)

Not so weird, because 2.66:1 = 8:3 = 2×(4:3) :D

I think that your aspect ratio is around 2.8
