Hi all. What is today the fastest h265 software decoder?
I remember that when h264 came, just coreavc was able to reproduce h264 movies on my pc.
Now, for h265 there is some decoder good for software decoding?
thanks

Even though it's rather limited, Strongene Lentoid still is the fastest "CPU-based" decoder for HEVC.
Actually the performance tests linked above would not support that statement, at least on 64-bit.

I use MPC-HC (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=166689), it comes with LAV built-in. But LAV works with any DirectShow player. (You need MPC-HC 64 to use LAV 64).

DivX very productive decoder (in software) ! I hope that they will find the ability to use/enable hardware GPU :) - It is a pity that the guys from team DivX cowardly.....

lav is unbelievable slow. videos are unwatchable (1-2 fps on xp in software decoding on an i5-2390t)
CyberLink PowerDVD14 Combo Decoder v.2.0.1660 is smooth but 60% cpu usage.
so whats the absolute fastest software decoder ?
nobody tested all codecs ?

The fact it's on XP is probably why it is running slow. Also the graphics driver is most likely out of date. Having limited RAM can also be problematic. All that said, h.265 is also quite demanding, but I believe the issue lies with the OS and graphics driver. The reason why Cyberlink manages and LAV doesn't (assuming you are running the latest build), is because software isn't made or compiled these days with XP in mind.

I tried LAV on XP a few months ago, and i didn't have any problem playing 1080p 60fps HEVC videos on a core 2 quad. Maybe 32bit support is borked in the latest version.

im talking about an 3840 x 2160 hevc video.
lav slow like hell 100% cpu but pdvd smooth @60-80%cpu
so why is lav/ffmpeg not as smooth as pdvd ?

maybe because powerdvd is a commercial product that has a lot of paid workers that work 8-10hrs per day each as their job rather than lots of people volunteering a small amount of time and a few paid developers.

The latest LAV filters are fast as hell, are you sure you're up to date ?
Like sneaker_ger, I've been using MPC-HC with its built-in LAV filters and never encountered any performance issue.
