View Full Version : Problem with BD-RB subtitles
srfdude
27th November 2014, 19:26
Been using BD RB for a couple years, have mostly figured it out. But recently I noticed that it wasn't processing subtitles. Either isos or folders won't show subs in any of my video players, not sure how far back it goes but they used to work. The ripped iso will play subs fine. I have enabled subs in "settings", ; the log doesn't show much. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi Dude. I always keep English subs when making movie-only backups, and I check them each time before burning with VLC on my desktop. So they work fine for me. Are you sure you picked the right sub language on the Setup screen?
srfdude
27th November 2014, 22:18
Yeah, I'm pretty careful about that. I have only 1 selected, Eng. and I usually check it before running BDRB. At first I thought it was my player, but a couple others did the same thing. And it will show the subtitles if I play the recently ripped ISO. I was going to reinstall BDRB, but got to looking, and it was doing the same thing with the previous version.
Thanks for the reply.

After you finish the re-encode, are there any *.sup files in your 'workfiles' folder?
Also, use 'notepad' to open up the meta files in that 'workfiles' folder and see if they refer to any *.sup files.
srfdude

Maybe I'm obtuse, but not sure where workfiles are. I looked in the program folder, didn't find anything. Where might that be?
Thanks.

It is in your working path. If not sure launch BD-RB main program and look at Working Path location.
srfdude
30th November 2014, 18:41
Ok, that was a brain fart. Yes in the workfiles folder there are multiple sup files; also the meta does reference those files. What does that mean?
"S_HDMV/PGS, "J:\MOVIES\BDS\WORKFILES\00023.track_4608.SUP",fps=23.976,lang=eng"
The only line in the meta file that references sup; and the only title showing in the processed movie is 4608 which is blank. This is typical, not only this movie.

Can you post full contents of meta file.

Nothing strange there. How are you playing your movies?

I recently did a movie only build of my Dawn of the Planet of the Apes BD with no reencode. I right clicked and set the subtitle to "on" just as I always have for forced subtitles, and no matter which subtitle track I choose (I always keep all English subs in case I don't know which one is the correct forced sub), power dvd 12 does not display them unless I actively turn them on. They are there, but they are not forced. My log file does, in fact, show that I enabled the subtitles. Also, the original ripped iso does play back the forced subtitles correctly. I assumed it had to do with being a 3D movie, as all of my other movies have worked just fine to this point, but now I wonder if there is something on this newer release causing the issue? Any help would be much obliged!!

Okay, I ran with your configuration, in my case player indeed does pick up forced subtitle set by BD-RB.
Most likely it is powerdvd issue.

Are any special settings needed in BD-Rebuilder for subtitles? in particular "forced" subtitles like for Avatar, 2012, District 9, etc.

It was done this way to get around an apparent bug in TSMUXER related to forced subtitles.Ok, so in its default settings when doing an Alt-Movie Only to MKV, BD-Rebuilder will backup the forced subs as PGS in the MKV and flagged on (so if the player can use PGS in the MKV, they will be on), right?
And I'm trying to find a post confirming, but... Under settings, there is the option to "use Suptitle for alternate forced subs". That converts the subs to .SRT muxed into the MKV file?
Or do I understand those incorrectly?

Alternate works differently. I'm not surehow to turn a subtitle on by default in an MKV. That doesn't mean it can't be done -- I'm just not sure how.
Converting PGS to SRT is a lengthy process that almost always requires human intervention to make corrections. BD-RB makes no attempt to do it.
Suptitle embeds the forced subtitles into the video itself. They can't be turned off.

Not exactly.
Alternate works differently. I'm not surehow to turn a subtitle on by default in an MKV. That doesn't mean it can't be done -- I'm just not sure how.Using SPMC (XBMC fork) on my Amazon FireTV stick, if the PGS sub is flagged FORCED or ON, the PGS sub displays. (using MKVMergeGUI if the default track = yes, and forced = yes).
Converting PGS to SRT is a lengthy process that almost always requires human intervention to make corrections. BD-RB makes no attempt to do it.Understood. I've used Subtitle Edit 3.3.6 to accomplish this stand alone, using its built in OCR.
Suptitle embeds the forced subtitles into the video itself. They can't be turned off.
So then for Avatar as example, or Angles and Demons, I should have the forced subtitles (that match my selected language) hard coded in my MKV's when that option is checked?
jdobbs
18th December 2014, 22:45
I'll look at forcing it on with MKVMERGE -- it's been a while since I looked at that code, you never know, I may have done it already.
On your last question -- yes.
Mark_Venture

On your last question -- yes.
I'm guessing BD-Rebuilder just can't properly pick out the forced subs on Avatar as I have no hard coded subs, and the PGS in the MKV includes all subs, not just the forced.
I'll have to try the others when I get a chance.
Avatar is my focus right now as its for my son...

You have to have Suptitle() enabled.
jdobbs
19th December 2014, 17:38
I just tested Avatar -- and the subtitles are hard-coded into the MKV just as they are supposed to be.
The downside of hard-coding is that if you ever select any other PGS subtitles during playback, you will see both at the same time. But many players don't support PGS subtitles in MKV, and hard-coding is the only way to support them.
jdobbs
19th December 2014, 18:00
I went back through it. There is an issue in which it looks like one subtitle got stuck on the screen for a long time ("...but there is much to learn") in the test output. But that's pretty much all handled by Suptitle() so I'm not sure there's anything I can do. I'll check my forced subtitle .SUP file and make sure the command to turn it off didn't get screwed up.
Mark_Venture

Either your INI isn't completely posted or you don't have Suptitle selected. If you did it would show in an area called [Paths] in the INI.
Suptitle() is free but isn't included in BD Rebuilder because it's license doesn't allow redistribution. You can download it from this link. (http://www.zachsaw.com/?pg=suptitle_pgs_avisynth_plugin) Just save it in a folder somewhere (a good place would be "C:\Program Files (x86)\AviSynth 2.5\plugins"). Then when you select it in the BD-RB SETUP menu it will let you browse for the location.

You have to use the 32 bit version. The 64 bit version can't be used with 32 bit AVISYNTH (and that is what is required for BD-RB).
Look in the .AVS file that is being encoded and see if the .DLL is being loaded.

I experienced this with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, where one subtitle was hard coded and stayed on the screen for about 2 minutes. So I loaded the original sup in BDSUP2SUB and the BD-RB copy xxxx9999, both had the length incorrect at about 2 minutes. So I corrected it with BDSUP2Sub, saved it and ran the job again and it was okay the second time.
So I started the job fresh all over, and after the demuxing stage I aborted the job and checked the two subtitles, the original and the copy renamed xxxx9999, and the same 2 minute long stuck sub was there again.
So there is something strange going on during demuxing!
EDIT:
When doing a full disc backup to BD25, the forced sub works correctly, no "sticking" for 2 minutes!
EDIT 2:
I need to make a clarification to above statement, since I misspoke :o
The original demuxed forced subtitle, 00800.track_4626, sub # 78, has the time to display the subtitle correct, 00:48:08.219 to 00:48:10.513. The BD-RB created forced sub, 00800.track_9999, has sub # 78 as 00:48:08.219 to 00:56:23.505.
So demuxing was okay, but the copy/renamed sub 00800.track_9999 has the problem!

Only the main title that will have the forced subs will look like that. I have not tried a multi-m2ts movie yet, but I would think the avs associated with the m2ts that has a forced sub needs to have "Suptitle()".
Is there suppose to be a forced sub in that part of the movie, that corresponds to the avs/m2ts file that does not have "Suptitle()" inside that avs?

I actually reported this bug a long time ago and could never get a response. Many movies with forced "alien/foreign" subs parts that should be on by default are not set to on.
This has been something I've seen in full backup and movie only.
After never getting a response I stopped trying to point it out.

No. Playing 00049.m2ts it appears to be the first 10 min of the movie. First forced subtitle I'm aware of is around the 14 min mark. However, Since the forced and non-forced are in the same PGS stream, it could be that SupTitle would be called to scan the PGS for the "forced" ones?
The PGS has "normal" font for the English subs, and the fancy font for the English translation of the Na'vi (that English of the Na'vi being the forced).
If I get time today or this weekend, I'm going to blow away my BD-Rebuilder folder, etc. and start from scratch and see what happens. Maybe that will help??
And just to step back... I'm talking about having the Forced ones "burned into" the resulting MKV file, not just a PGS of the forced included in the MKV

That .SUP file is then fed to SupTitle().Only the main title that will have the forced subs will look like that. I have not tried a multi-m2ts movie yet A multipart wouldn't change anything. When BD-RB extracts the SUPs it combines all the parts into a single .SUP (for movie-only encodes such as ALTERNATE).

I'm still investigating why that one hangs around. I think the subtitles are handled weirdly in that disc. I noticed that when you look at them with a subtitle editor, they don't seem to be forcedly turned off -- the "off" time seems to always be the "on" time of the next subtitle.
If that's the case, I can always artificially create an "off" condition in the stream when the subtitle is displayed for some preset amount of time (maybe 5 seconds or so) and no other subtitle has overridden it.

I don't recall that many movies with forced subtitles that I have watched, but if you implemented this within BD-RB, it would be pretty valuable to many users, and continue to be another great addition to BD-RB!

So I if I see a 00049.track_9999.SUP in the working folder, that is the forced subs, and that should have been passed to SupTitle to burn into the video?
Even though I do see a 00049.track_9999.SUP in the working folder, what I end up with is an MKV that contains a single PGS sub included in it, that contains both the non-forced and forced subtitles. But nothing burned into the video.
If I manually mux 00049.track_9999.sup into the MKV, the are just the forced subs. So does that indicate a problem with SupTitle? Is there a way to trouble shoot that?

Well, I did find one possibility. If you start a job with a forced subtitle, stop it, exit BD-RB, restart BD-RB and resume the job -- it may be possible the forced subtitle is not included in the ALTERNATE encode with SupTitle.
I've made a change for the next release that would enable it again on job restart.

I just tried both a movie only backup and an alternate to MP4 of the Equalizer (w/Denzel Washington.) There is a problem with forced subs. Neither of them contain the forced subs. The subs begin at 19:56 and occur at various times throughout the movie. The rip plays the subs just fine. If anyone has gotten this movie to work, I would love to know how. I am including my logs in case someone sees what I have set wrong. BTW...as a test I also did Star Wars IV (A New Hope) to MP4. This movie has always been a problem to get the forced subs to work. It worked just fine now that I have subtitle() installed.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
