VirtualDub doesn't support MP4 format. Only AVI.

You can load MP4 files into VirtualDub via Avisynth, of course. But that gives you only the "raw" (uncompressed) video data, so "direct stream copy" won't be a real option...

(You could give Avidemux (http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/) a try. Despite its name, it does support MP4 files. You could also join the MP4's with FFmpeg (https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/How%20to%20concatenate%20%28join,%20merge%29%20media%20files), if you don't mind using CLI)

ffmpeg should do it: >ffmpeg -i concat:"1.mp4|2.mp4|3.mp4" -codec copy "123.mp4"

For a nice ffmpeg GUI wrapper, try FFQueue (Tools, Merge files)

I know about Virtualdub it only can save avi files but I was wondering if there were any trick to bypass and finally, be able to save any mp4 or wmv files, that's why I submitted here.

I tried ffmpeg to join a few mp4 files but the output file I can't view it on the Media Player Classic, it works with VLC and WMP.

Also I noticed that the transition from one video clip to another is a bit 'brutal', uncomfortable. I would like this to be more like a gradient, little by little. Sorry for my bad english. This is not occurred with Boilsoft joiner.

How to do it ?

Not possible with VirtualDub.

VirtualDub does support using an "external" encoder now, which then might output MP4 or MKV files. But that's only possible when re-encoding, not in "direct stream copy" mode.

Use an up-to-date MPC-HC build from here (http://nightly.mpc-hc.org/). It has all required splitters and decoders built-in!

If you want the one clip to fade smoothly into the other clip, then this is only possible by re-encoding, not in "direct stream copy" mode.

What's the main difference between MPC Classic and MPC-HC ?

I will uninstall MPC Classic before installing MPC-HC

Which lightweight program could I use to split manually any videos and with a preview and without reencoding videos files ?

The original Media Player Classic isn't developed anymore (the last update was around 2006). At the same time, MPC-HC is still actively developed and it's impossible to list all the fixes/improvements here.

But, most important, MPC-HC contains an "embedded" version of LAV Filters (https://code.google.com/p/lavfilters/), so it plays pretty much everything "out of the box", i.e. it won't need any separate Decoders or Splitters...

I'd try with Avidemux.

I come back to tell you that the troubles I got with MPC, it is with my MPC-HC 1.6.8 version. I told you it was a MPC Classic, I was wrong.

I splitted a video in 2 pieces, but I only able to view the first image, not the video. What's wrong with MPC-HC, please ? Moreover, when opening a video file (not splitted, not joined, but the original one), it freeze during the beginning during a few seconds, this is with any kind of videos. How can I fix this issue ?

The MPC-HC version you are using is old, download the latest version from here (http://mpc-hc.org/):

You should try to keep updated your codecs/programs, especially with mp4 files.

Yes, although Avidemux is full of bugs, it is good to simple joining,
it did me the job whereas a commercial sw failed

I will uninstall MPC Classic before installing MPC-HCKeep both, the old mpc is more stable and compatible

If you don't worry about the output container you can also use mmg of mkvtoolnix for merging.

Hi,

How to merge a few mp4 files (direct stream copy enabled) with Virtualdub ?

Thanks in advance.

First off, they have to have the same attributes. You can't join videos with different dimensions and framerates.

You'll need the latest version of Virtualdub with all of fcchandler's input plugins and acm codecs. You can find them all at the Virtualdub download page at videohelp.com (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Virtualdub) or the http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=SF&f=7. This site doesn't have much support for Virtualdub.

You will need to set vfw config in ffdsow to open h264/avc and anything else you don't have codecs for.

Open first mp4 and select Direct Stream Copy under Video, saving as video 01.avi. Do the same for each file you want to join, saving as video 02.avi, video 03.avi etc...

Open first avi in Virtualdub and select Append Avi Segment (making sure that autodetect additional segments by filename is checked). All your files should be opened. Direct Stream Copy and save the joined avis'. Then use ffmpeg to copy the video and audio files into an mp4 container.

Virtualdub can be used to save to just about any file type that you want by using the External Encoder feature and command line encoders.

There is a guide here, showing how to use the external encoder...

http://forums.virtualdub.org/index.php?act=ST&f=3&t=18840&

Stax76 post about mkvmerge is a good way to join files also. Drag and drop or open first file in mkvmerge. Choose Append in the top right corner add next file, choose append again to add next file and so on and so on. Save as mkv. Use mp4box or ffmpeg to copy to mp4 container.

Have you ever tried to use other software to join MP4 files (http://www.videograbber.net/join-mp4-files.html)? As far as I know, Video Converter Studio, MP4Joiner, and Free Video Joiner can help you well. Maybe you can try them. :D
