View Full Version : DVD-Rebuilder - Replace QuEnc with ffmpeg

Anyone still converting to or backing up DVDs?
I certainly do, and DVD-Rebuilder is in regular use here (free version mostly).
Since the QuEnc encoder is really deprecated today I made a little tool to replace it with a current version of ffmpeg. From the doc:
This small utility allows replacing the old and deprecated QuEnc encoder with
current versions of ffmpeg. It works for DVD-Rebuilder and DVD2SVCD. It
supports custom quant matrices, it offers 1-pass and 2-pass VBR modes plus a very
high quality 2-pass VBR mode intended for low bitrates below 3500k.
You can get it here:

Great news man. But why not use HENC with it?

It's always nice to have alternatives, isn't it? According to Fishman the 2-pass HQ mode gives better results than HCenc for bitrates below 3500k. And in standard 1-pass mode ffmpeg is a lot faster than HC (at least on my machine).
So just look at it as an option...

Oh...Most of my encodes are in the 2700-3500k bitrates...And pardon my ignorance, but who is fishman?
edit: In Avs2dvd I meant these were my encodes :P

@jdobbs
Any hope of you incorporating this directly into DVD_RB?

I'm a little skeptical. I tested FFMPEG with DVD-RB -- admittedly a long time ago -- and I could never get results that compared to HC Encoder. But then, as manolito says, it never hurts to have options. I'd suggest just replacing QuEnc as he suggested. QuEnc is way, way outdated.

Heh I just had a look at that download manolito. It appears truly awesome. I can't wait to get home, download it and give it a go! Thanks for another free alternative to use as encoder :)

I've had problems with QuEnc and was very interested in this, but the link has expired. Any chance of getting it renewed?
:thanks:
