For those don't know, the next OS will have Matroska support out of the box (http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-mkv-support-out-of-the-box)...finally. :)

Do you have a list of the out of the box audio & video codecs Windows 10 supports?
I wonder which codecs they have licensed for "official" support. Their so called DVD playback add-on was really irritating... I stopped using Windows Media Player because of that... They also unbundled their Media Center due to so called royalty fees...

So will this work for other players than the built-in Windows Media Player?
And has anyone tested it with ordered chapters yet? Curious if they will support all the features Matroska has to offer, most implementation's don't.

Out of interest...
Have any of the software developers who frequent our forum tested their applications with Windows 10?

It is a Media Foundation source filter, so it will only work in apps that use MF, and it also means that it only supports audio/video formats that can be decoded with MF, so it currently won't work with for example HEVC video. It also does not support subtitles, chapters, and audio stream selection. So it actually is pretty useless.

Just like the player that this will support.

If Windows 10 brings us the ability to use the 'Play to' option to send .mkv contained media files to my network connected media players... I'm in ;)

You can already do that on Windows 8.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.mkv\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\PlayTo]
@="{7AD84985-87B4-4a16-BE58-8B72A5B390F7}"
If you install a proper DLNA server (Plex/Serviio/PS3MediaServer/etc) then you don't need to 'push' content to your devices, but you can just access content directly from those devices. Much more user friendly.

What I want to do is 'push' .mkv contained 'from' my PC to all my media players ;)

Nothing like being able to make every screen in the house simultaneously show Max Headroom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KUEQ4nWv7Y) from your PC.

Well, I know it's early days but....
I installed the 64-bit version of Windows 10 on a spare SSD. And the first thing I did was try and play some .mkv contained files and none of them were supported.
Sufficed to say, the 'Play to' option would not work with .mkv (and .flac) files either

Hybrid seems to work fine. Haven't found any show stoppers using 2014.11.03.1. (since Hybrid uses mencoder/mplayer/ffmpeg/mediainfo/avisynth,.. all these seems also to work fine)
(I'm using Windows 10, with latest updates, inside a VirtualBox VM.)

Well...a MediaFoundation flac decoder (http://sourceforge.net/projects/mfflac/) must be required I guess to play those files. This is not included by default. More info about this here (http://blog.dabasinskas.net/enable-flac-support-on-windows-8/).

Well...its off-topic but yeah all tools that work fine in Windows 8.1 should work also in Windows 10.

@Selur
Not yet tested but usually they are very good in not breaking too much so almost everything running on Vista should run on 10.

EDIT: Support for Matroska's MKA (audio only) container is also supported. Nice one...

Microsoft will have ticked all the boxes I require once FLAC is supported...
Another one of the good things about Matroska support is, it's now possible to create say, multi-channel DTS and Dolby Digital 'audio only' .MKA contained muxes and push them to hardware playback devices via DLNA/UPnP.
Sufficed to say, I have tried creating 2Ch and multi-channel FLAC 'audio only' .MKA contained muxes too. But sadly, they're a little unstable...

To inform, installation of my codec package will allow you to use the LAV Filters when utilizing the Play To functionality of Windows.
After installation, the GUI comes up automatically. You just need to select the [x] SUGGESTED settings checkbox.
