I was just reading the new moved posts (Winding down BD Rebuilder support) Sob! But I then saw the Inexpensive BD-R Media Thread which I thought was inactive and noticed some new comments. Especially this one on the last page by Asmodian. RE: All burned DVDs or blurays will be unreadable in 10 years, even the expensive media (unless M-Disc, maybe). At least all my burned CDs and DVDs have gone bad.

-- This led me to dig into my overflowing "dusty" DVD cabinet and trying to locate my oldest "burned" dvd. I spent a while and I vaguely remember that the first DVD I played was with an original X-Box, which I bought as an early X-mas present for myself back in November 2001. I remember when I bought it, I also bought a Laura Croft Tomb Raider DVD to play in it. I got home and put it in and found out I had to go back to the store and buy a X-Box dvd remote module because Microsoft couldn't just let you use the controller for that, thanks again Microshaft! Anyhow I think that was my first DVD copy. And guess WHAT? IT STILL PLAYS. It was burned on ‎‎‎Friday, ‎August ‎12, ‎2005, ‏‎6:57:33 PM on a Memorex (yuck), file size was only 3.53 GB. Of course it was only movie-only because I didn't know how to use DVD-Shrink then to keep menus and extras, LOL. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has some older disks they can check and see if they have some older ones that are still playable. Hard to believe all my old Memorex and imation one's are still playable especially after being stood edgewise and with 30 pounds of other boxes placed on top of them in the cabinet. I hardly ever get them out now that blue-ray has consumed my viewing time. It makes me sad to look at them and think they might be unplayable. I hope to hear from some other peoples experiences with their "OLD" disks, thanks worknstiff

Also: FYI? When I was looking for my oldest DVD, I went to google and found out that the "FIRST" dvd movie was "TWISTER" in 1996. If you're looking for your oldest dvd. LOL

I am pretty much sure it was 2003 or 2004, if not even fall 2002. It was the NEC 1300, one of the first dual type (+ and -) burners. By summer 2004 I had already the standalone DVR.
The DVDRs burned back then are readable also today. nevertheless, one should also remember that the quality of DVDRs in 2002-2003-2004 were much much higher. It's difficult to compare.

Wow, you've got me beat by a whole year, Do the disks still play? I burned my first DVD on a "NEW" Dell XPS-T500 bought in 1999 just in time for win98 SE. I paid extra for a CD Burner and DVD player drive. I didn't get my Plextor PX-716A 16x DVD burner until 2005, this was when just about all DVD blanks were 8x only. I hope that all this talk about the dye's used in these disks drying out are mistaken.

I have lots of discs burned in 2003 and later... and probably some earlier (I can't remember that far back, hell, I can't even remember when I put the first DVD-RB version out). I haven't run across a bad one yet. I can also say that I have VCDs and SVCDs that are a lot older than that -- and I can still read those too.

Great, I hope mine will last quite a while longer too. I took a lot of time to make them, even if at first I didn't know enough not to use Memorex or imation. I didn't learn about disk quality until DL media came along and now it's Verbatim all the way. I crossed my fingers when I saw Memorex on the label.

Oldest I have is a Verbatim 4x made in Singapore, burned in 2003 on an NEC 1300a. Still plays perfectly well.

Posted this at the Myce forum, I'll post the image here as well.
I have some data backups that possibly are older, but here's a DVD film backup I burned in september 2005, on my NEC 3500. Maxell 4x Yuden000T01. Still reads very well, the worsening quality near the end of the disk I blame mostly on the fact that it has not been handled very well (by others than me of course :) ) - you know, fingerprints and small scratches.

As far as I can remember, which is about 15 years of optical disc usage, I've had 2 discs gone totally bad on me, both CDs, and both not handled well. Sunlight and wrong write speed. (naturally I've had some coasters, bad burns, and whatever, but I haven't kept them - I scan most new media I encounter and only burn important stuff to what I believe are good discs)

CDs from 1998 1999 reading perfectly and DVDs (both burned) from year 2001 onwards in perfect condition. Just 2 days ago, I had to go through 2 DVDs burnt in 2003. Worked too....But these are data discs and not Video discs....

@ SuLyMaN RE: DVDs (both burned) from year 2001 onwards in perfect condition.

Wow!, and I was grateful when my 2005 imations were still playable. Maybe reports of disintegrating disks with bubbles forming in the dye have just been anecdotal at best. Thanks for the feedback, pirum and SuLyMaN
