4K Cinavia

I see in the "News" section of the Forum that Sony will implement Cinavia on their 4K Players/Disks/Stream.

Well, this time we have the power to start as we mean to go on.

They have put a lot of investment into this, so, BOYCOTT the system.

The point is that cinavia did not hindered the sales of BDs, at least not substantially. I would presume the sales even increased by the number of curious people that wanted to test it :) .

In another thread I've seen already photos of degraded BDRs (ok, budget ones), so having a copy would be pricey, unless one wants to pay for the extra convenience of having the mandatory trailers and ads removed (for me even the nasty menus that delay the start of the movie sensibly, especially on older players).

God yes, those bloody trailers and menu after menu.

I have a 16TB storage unit and I only store "Movie Only" for exactly that reason.

Just out of interest, what does the average Blu Ray section look like in Germany compared with DVD.

In the UK, say HMV store I would say less than 8% is Blu Ray.

When DVD came out it offered massive advantages in many ways over VHS.
When Blu Ray came out it only really offered better Picture and Sound quality.
I say ONLY because although this is very important to people like us, it has proved that this is not that important to "Joe Public".

I think that probably "Disk" based 4K will totally flop and will only de-stabilise confidence in HD Blu Ray.

The old ones appear mainly only as DVDs, for a very simple reason, they want to get the buck off customer before selling him again in BD format aftre the DVD is declared dead (typical for end-of-life-products - so it was the VHS before).

As absolute numbers, DVDs are still, visually, get the bigger volume, yet not by far, say 60:40.

Now that's interesting, I asked 2 stores for DVD vs Blu Ray sales, one store in Milton Keynes (Large HMV) and HMV in Oxford Street in Central London.
Both gave similar answers, that DVD sales were about 85% Blu ray 15%

As Cinavia is audio watermarking it is expected that any decent DSP capable system will have on Cinavia implementation - hope is only that for China Cinavia will be to expensive then Chinese players will ignore this protection.

The point is IMO that BDs are still sensibly more expensive than the DVDs. A brand new movie is 25-30€ on BD and 15-25€ on DVD. Many people are still well served by DVDs and see no reason to pay 10€ more (50-33%).

Well yes of course.

That's not the point at all, it is totally irrelevant.
The point is that DVD went ballistic in a very short time and even after all this time Blu Ray is very very poor.

The fact that people WONT folk out the few extra bucks for the Blu Ray version is exactly my point, it means that the extra quality is NOT important to them.
