View Full Version : 2.0 upmix to 5.1

I use a lot of eac3to. Sadly, it can't upmix (ac3), though. My amp does a great Neural THX upmix for 2.0 sound; but my XMBC, which I'm using since my PS3 died, only lets me do 7.1 channels over HDMI, so my Amp doesn't see 2.0 channels any more for its upmix.

Like I said, eac3to can't do it, and XBMC's stereo upmix is downright pathetic. So, is there any tool (preferably freeware, of course) that can do it half-way properly?

Thanks.

What is the input? Streaming from a specific media player? Or are you planning on converting everything to a new file on disk?

Avisynth has the capability (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=134017), though I'm not sure how each mix sounds. ffmpeg and sox can also do it, but I don't know the specific incantations.

Yeah, XBMC is my new media player for streaming. My old PS3 would just parse 2.0 audio thru HDMI in such a manner, that my HD Amp still saw it as 2.0 audio (and, hence, could upmix). XBMC simply always delivers it to the Amp as 7.1 channels (even though, effectively, only 2 are used on some sources).

So, I was therefore planning on simply upmixing the audio streams at the source (on my hard disk, inside the files), so XBMC can just parse them upscaled already. Although going that route may be a huge job.

Thanks for the advice, btw. I'll look into those. :)
