Custom VDub or new package

I no longer consider myself an MPEG4 newbie (having done a fair number of films in Divx 3,4 and XVID now.

{edit - just saw the thread below about B frames.. oops)

Is Avery Lee invloved, is there a team somewhere busily writing an editing package just for Xvid, oh and will this new cool package handle ogg steam properly?

I need more info!

Well, it has only been "talked" about as of yet, but here is its standing:

B-frame support requires a special encoder - the codec alone will not do. This means either we adapt our own XviD-aware encoder (say forking VDub again) or wait until VDub 2.0 shows up with its plugin system. Then there's the third option of starting from scratch - all the program has to do is be able to load an .avs script and dump an .avi file - pretty simple stuff. Or it could just dump an MPEG4 video stream, which could later be wrapped in .avi or .ogg or whatever, or the program itself could mux in vbr mp3 and create oggs.. who knows.

Avery Lee is not involved, as this is all up in the air. There are no concrete plans, no time lines and no coding in progress to this goal. Truth be told, I don't think you'll see much to do with this for a month or so yet. It is required, however, if windows users want to be able to encode with B-frames when they arrive (linux users will be able to do this with transcode or other tools).
