View Full Version : Scenarist Safeguard - cannot create Key Pairs

Help!
I have tried both 5.3.2 & 5.7 (I am keyed for both versions) but no matter what system I install to (tried 2 Windows 7 versions & one Windows XP version) I am utterly unable to create Key Pairs or certificates.
Safeguard fires up, it is activated, but when I get to the "finish" part in the initial Key Pair creation nothing happens.

This is causing serious problems as it leaves me utterly dependent on someone else making them for me......

Any ideas?

Date stamp issues maybe ? End of service ?
I suggest to try a past system date that lies well within the "lifecycle" of these versions (maybe within 1 year after their publication), then try again.

That won't work for a number of reasons, not the least of which are certain Copy Protection devices that throw a wobbler if the clock is off by as much as 15 minutes from real time.
I've also been talking to Dave Smith who tells me this is far from uncommon, and the problem was only discovered after Scenarist was killed off by Rovi - and it is not working here on any machine in any keyed version (5.3.2 & 5.7 both fail) on 2 Windows 7 rigs & an XP one. Yet my Java programmer is having no such trouble using a bootcamped Mac running Windows 8.1.

Dave says he is looking into alternatives, but at this point I am utterly dependent on a 3rd party to make the certificates which is far from an ideal situation for obvious reasons.

Now poking further... Could it be that something of your chain is relying on .net 3.5
and could it further be that a unlucky windows update has loaded somwhow incompatible pieces of .net ot Visual C++ ?

I happened to have such dysfunctions recently with 2 pieces of software.
Some dependency walker (although not reliable anymore) and
conclusions from CLP20r3 messages helped me in the right direction.

In the end .net 4.52 helped me for one occasion,
for the other I am still searching...

That is more than possible. During installation, one of the C++ packs is indeed installed, which for all I know may be overwriting all sorts of things with bad & out of date versions. I do not know why it is but this seems more common in Audio tools, especially some plugins that seem to slap in a C++ 2005/08/10/whatever "service pack" and if I look in "Programs & Data" there seem to be countless variations on Visual C++ service packs and updates & I have long wondered about the risk of corruption.

How would I go about checking, and perhaps more importantly, how can I tell what revisions could be safely uninstalled and/or is there a utility somewhere that can check the correct versions are properly installed?
I have to confess off the bat that I am a very long way from being an IT specialist so really would not know where to start looking for the answers, although I could pass this suggestion/theory along to Dave.....but on the downside there he has said that as far as BD-J goes we are on our own. It would be really great to find an answer - I cannot believe it is terminal, and had been wondering if it was a library somewhere out of whack or using the wrong version of something.

What I have tried so far is uninstalling altogether, clearing the registry and restarting/reinstalling version 5.3.2 of SBD, SBD-J and Safeguard, reactivating each - no good. Uninstall, reinstall 5.7 versions - no good. Uninstall, reinstall 5.3.2 - still no good, but leaving this build installed as we don't (thus far) do 3D so no need for the additional complexity & wobbliness introduced by the changed mux engine. I've also tried installing on 2 other setups (XP32 & another Windows 7 system) and get the same issue. I launch Safeguard, set the Key Store location. Start to create a new Key Pair and it makes no difference whether I use my real info & Organization ID etc or go with the default generated one - it gets through all data/text entry, gets to the "finish" point & when I click on the "finish" button - nothing happens. I can work with imported BD-J files, do what needs to be done in SBD-J, SBD, QC etc but it will not create a Key Pair.

Reading from other's experiences the versioning of Visual C++ and .net might be a mess, sometimes newer versions might break compatibility.
I would try to uninstall all versions of Visual C++ / .net, then starting to reinstall with the minimal required versions of these interfaces.

Do not start the calling application too early !
Given that in case of missing driver/module Windows might silently fall back on just the cached driver/module
(which you wanted to avoid because it borks the setup again) making the search more time consuming.

Some say that only the SDK contains properly maintained parts and the Redistributables might be out of date/ partly incompatible.

At my side Sony Vegas Pro 10 32bit won't fire up on a Win7U64 machine anymore while the 64 bit version runs properly.
Both used to work fine side by side until a unnoticed update day.
The paid-for 32 bit Izotope Mastering plugins are out of reach on the 64 bit version...

This is what terrifies me about messing with things I do not understand. We run iZotope RX3 Advanced (amongst a lot of other stuff) and I dare not risk having the problem you are getting with Ozone.

I think I may write to Microsoft & try to see what they have to say.

Writing to Microsoft was a complete waste of time.
I had to post to tech support, which I did in detail complete with screenshots and even got an email back telling me that my request had been answered - but it is not possible to get to see the reply as I log in on the link provided and get "you do not have permission to view this content". Very weird so gave up on that as they never answered any emails.
Thankfully Scenarist is back (or so it seems) so am hoping they will have a BD-J support on hand.
