Should I deinterlace MBAFF at double frame rate?

As titled. I understand why one would want to deinterlace at double frame rate if the material was shot as interlace to begin with.

What about MBAFF though? My understanding is that it starts with progressive source then selectively interlace some macroblocks on each frame. Does it still make sense to do double frame rate here (29.97i to 59.94p)?

MBAFF is just a coding efficiency; it's the content that matters. If the content is interlaced, you can still benefit from double rate deinterlacing.

I wonder if it is worth my effort to use qtgmc. In the past I used Handbrake to decomb the video before using MeGUI to finish the encode (although at the same frame rate; e.g. 29.97i to 29.97p).

That looks like pure interlaced to me, with blended fields too. I would deinterlace to 59.94p. I didn't test it but QTGMC would be my first try.

Hard to tell exactly what's up with that clip, but being blended so much, QTGMC would likely be a waste of time. SRestore would be my starting point, but I'd need a much longer clip or one with much more motion to figure out with what parameters. That clip has too little movement. It looks like on some parts of it, every field is merged with the next field, and on other parts, every other field is good but some of the counterparts are a blend of the next+previous, like they were dropped and recreated. Strange editing.

Sorting out the 'live action' parts of the video looks straight forward enough...

But the holographic anime was most probably created at a much higher frequency than the camera used to capture the live action!

BTW what does it mean to been blended so much?
