H.264 vs MP4 vs XVID Which is best for AVI??

H.264 and XviD are video formats.
MP4 and AVI are containers that both can use both those formats.

Even then, that's pretty broad in the broadest of terms.

It would depend more on what you intend to use to playback the AVI.
Some TV's and DVD/BD players have severe limitations that they only accept older XviD formats.
H.264/x264 is more common for newer devices, but probably with limited encoding settings.

For maximum compatibility, use XviD.

I am using Freemake to convert videos to avi so they will play on my Philips dvd player

In that case, Xvid+MP3/AC3 in AVI. DVD Players do not support H.264 nor MP4.

AVI and MP4 are just containers, and can contain video decoded with different codeces, like those you mentioned.
Sorry for repeating others, I did not see that until now. Can I just delete this reply then?
