Video player with USB Videos Autoplayback

Hi guys. I have been trying to repurpose an old PC into an idiot proof HTPC to play media files.
So far I have tried Openelec and Windows with Potplayer.
Openelec will only auto play DVD. I have not found any method to make it autoplay video from usb on insert.

Potplayer has settings for autoplay (F5). I tried this, together with changing default programs behaviour in control panel but it absolutely will not autoplay my videos.

Are there any softwares free or paid that can auto load media from USB?

PS: The PC will not have any keyboard input, will only be navigable by mouse (if need be) and the default player will be configured to launch on start. The power button will act as shutdown.

You can do it with Windows XP but not with Windows 7 and higher. What OS do you have on there?

Why not W7? It has autoplay too, but it's disabed for a very good reason (safety).
I've just turned it on and it managed to automatically launch MPC-HC and play video on a flash drive... The only problem I run into - it doesn't consider mkv as video files (only mp4/avi).

@neuron2: Hi guys. Yeah I was thinking of using a Windows 7 OS on it as its not a so old PC. E5200 (Dual core 2.4Ghz) 2Gigs Ram, a decent graphics card. As far as I know and as far as I tried on my current PC with potplayer/enabling autoplay in Win7, it just does not autoplay.
I want the player to just load the video files and start playing when a pendrive with video is inserted. Does windows XP allow you to autoplay a video file? If yes, I could look into it.

@vivan: I re-enabled autoplay setting in control panel and set the default action for movie files to play with potplayer. I also set the autoplay setting in pot for video files (via F5) Maybe MPC-HC is loading it correctly.

@ceremony: I want an idiot proof setup which only will require turning on the PC, inserting the pendrive and shutting it down via power button! Batch files is not really an option ;-)

I've just tried it in windows 8.1 and it works.

When you enable an autoplay option in the preferences of potplayer, the context menu of potplayer for autoplay settings will be available in the control panel of windows. You need to enable it manually.

ps. I've tested it in windows 7 and it works without any problem.

Not sure if the autoplay is possible(this seem to say it is: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=145881), but you could install the live version of XBMC and set it to open directly in a movie folder configured to list the files from the usb drive.

Does it play mkv files? If not, what files does it play? I added a bunch of avis, mp4s to test.

EDIT: Potplayer won't autoplay avis,mkvs, mp4s when I insert pendrive.

It requires a file association in advance. I have no problem with mkv or something else.

File associations are set. And yeah prior to seeing your post, I uninstalled my version and got the latest version.
Re-associating the video files just to be sure!

I just realised something. My USB autorun does not even pop up when inserting a pendrive. I just get the icon in taskbar and I know the pendrive is loaded. Might have to do with my windows. Checking it out.

Wow. Thanks for all the help guys! Something had disabled my autorun in registry. Going there http://www.mydigitallife.info/fix-windows-7-autoplay-dialog-box-missing-or-not-appear-display-and-pop-up/ helped fix it!

That DUMB PROOF video refurbished PC is on its way!
