View Full Version : Glitches when playing MPEG2 video

Not sure where to ask about this. I'm using MPC-HC, the latest KLite Codec Pack (10.4.4) on Windows 8.

I have videos from an old VCD that comes from Thailand. These videos are rendering with glitches, and I know I had been watching them without problem in the past with a different setup.

Here's one of the videos that has glitches. It is most noticeable at 1m35.

MPC-HC has a serious audio glitch that lasts 10 seconds.

If I play the same file in Windows Media Player (using same codecs), it just has a quick audio skip that is easy to overlook.

It appears to be a bug partially with the video, partially with the codec and partially with MPC-HC.

It would be great if that bug could be fixed, although I'm not sure which piece of software would have to be fixed.

It's not MPEG-2 video, it's MPEG-1... And who changed the file extension to .AVI

Besides, nobody should place MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video (especially with b-frames) into the .AVI container anyway... It's just asking for trouble...

Wow that's it. If I play directly from the CD, it plays fine. Copying the file locally and changing the extension from DAT to AVI was the easiest way to "rip" the videos. I just tried setting an extension of MP4, or even letting the original DAT, and it still plays with the same glitches when played locally.

So we're onto something here.

Is there a way to play the video files contained in the VCD directly from my computer without having this container problem?

I just tried MakeMKV v1.8.10, as it rips DVDs without re-encoding and simply changes the container. However, when I try this with a VCD, it says

MakeMKV v1.8.10 win(x64-release) started
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:ILLEGAL MODE FOR THIS TRACK' occurred while reading 'DVD+R-DL TSSTcorp CDDVDW SN-208BB SC01' at offset '524288'
Error 'Scsi error - ILLEGAL REQUEST:ILLEGAL MODE FOR THIS TRACK' occurred while reading 'DVD+R-DL TSSTcorp CDDVDW SN-208BB SC01' at offset '1048576'

Any other option?

Your "rip" is bad (corrupted).
