View Full Version : MeGUI Update Issues

Hello and thanks in advance for any help. I've been using MeGUI (currently core 2418, data 2388, and libs 0.3.5) for some years, mostly to convert audio but with the occasional video re-encode, and was hoping that some kind soul could help me with an updating issue. When I check for updates I receive a message that everything is up to date but at megui.org/auto/ the latest core is 2491. However, when I try to replace the 2418 core with the 2491 core and open MeGUI, I receive a message that "MeGUI cannot find at least one required component. Without these components MeGUI will not run properly (e.g. no jobs can be started). Do you want to search now online for updates?" but when I click "Yes" I receive the error message "MeGUI encountered a fatal error and may not be able to proceed. Reason: Visual Styles-related operation resulted in an error because no visual style is currently active." then the MeGUI-Updater window opens and shows that AviSynth portable is wanting to reinstall but no matter how many times I try it never actually does. Please, can anyone explain to me how to update the core? Thanks again for your time.

Edit: basically, I'm ignorant and don't understand how to get the latest core to work with the latest data and libs. Any help very welcome :) .

Already reported over here

Have you turned off themes? if so try turning them back on and retry the update. If you are still getting the same error please jump in to the MeGUI Bugs and Feature request thread and post your full log.

Thanks for your reply, AMED. I've never encountered a "theme" setting in MeGUI, so I'm not sure where I'd go to turn them back on :o . I'll check out the link you posted. Just so I can learn something, should I simply be able to replace the old core file with the new core file and have it work? Pardon my ignorance if that's a ridiculously silly question but I don't know the answer. To me it seems that I should be able to "build" a functional MeGUI by placing the newest core, data, and libs in their proper places in my MeGUI folder, but when I did that I had all sorts of issues. Thanks again for your help.

The update problem should be fixed. Please try this build:
http://megui.org/test/MeGUI.zip
(Extract it into your MeGUI directory overwriting the old file)

As soon as the update is running again you will be forced to downgrade to 2487. If you confirm that everything is running and you do not get the visual styles error anymore I will add 2492 to the update server.

Thank you for your patience. I did as requested above and received the error message "MeGUI encountered a fatal error and may not be able to proceed. Reason: Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Then out of curiousity, I booted up my old laptop and tried with its MeGUI (2356 core, 2359 data, 0.3.5 libs) and received the message "MeGUI cannot find at least one component...", so I selected "Yes" and the Update window appeared with AviSynth plugins, AviSynth portable, data, mediainfo, and MeGUI. I selected "Update" then MeGUI wanted to restart. Upon restarting it's core 2492 but if I go to Update several of the options have newer Server Versions (DGIndexNV, FFmpeg, L-SMASH Works, mkvmerge, MP4Box, Opus, QAAC, tsMuxeR, x264, x264 10bit, and x265) but the Status is "package disabled".

So back to my new laptop. I downloaded the newest version of MeGUI at sourceforge.net (2418 core, not sure about data, 0.3.5 libs), extracted it to a folder then extracted the core you linked. It went through the same updating process as the older version on my old laptop, updating the same five things (AviSynth plugins, AviSynth portable, data, mediainfo, and MeGUI) but also leaving me with the same items (DGIndexNV, FFmpeg, L-SMASH Works, mkvmerge, MP4Box, Opus, QAAC, tsMuxeR, x264, x264 10bit, and x265) with newer Server Versions yet not updated and with "package disabled". Finally, I replaced the "allprofiles" folder and the "settings.xml" file in this new folder with the ones from my old unable-to-update folder, copied neroaac from the old "tools" folder to the new "tools" folder, and it seems to work fine (other than the "package disabled" issues). I wish that I'd thought of this earlier so as to save everyone involved some time :( . Anyway, thanks again for the help and if anyone's willing I'd really like to understand why the packages are disabled.

Edit: upon reopening the new MeGUI (after converting a test audio file then closing the program) I'm prompted to update L-SMASH Works but am unable to do so, with the message "Error: Failed to download package L-SMASH Works: File cannot be found on the server." However, if I opt out of the update prompt I'm still able to use the program, at least to convert an audio file.

More Edit: upon reopening the new MeGUI on my old laptop there's no prompt to update anything and L-SMASH Works is listed as "package disabled".

Please post the full log of this error (if still available).

Anyway, thanks again for the help and if anyone's willing I'd really like to understand why the packages are disabled.
That is desired. Packages will be disabled if they are not used to save bandwidth (for you and the update server). They will be automatically enabled when you use them or you can enable them manually (options\update - right click on the item). As this is a new feature all optional packages are disabled after the update as the usage data has not been collected.

Please post the full log of this error (if still available).

This is the only log file I could find:

Preliminary log file only. During closing of MeGUI the well formed log file will be written.

Please let me know where to look for "the well formed log file" mentioned at the beginning of this log file, if it exists. Also, for what it's worth, I've tried to recreate the error, with the original containing folder and with an older backup of the containing folder, but am unable to do so. Also, if it matters, I run MeGUI from a RAMDisk so it's saved rather sporadically (I only create a new image when one of the programs on the RAMDisk is updated). Lastly, when trying to recreate the error both attempts were not only successful but they also succeeded without the L-SMASH Works update issue I encountered when using the fresh download from sourceforge.net.

That is desired. Packages will be disabled if they are not used to save bandwidth (for you and the update server). They will be automatically enabled when you use them or you can enable them manually (options\update - right click on the item). Thank you very much for the explanation, I appreciate it :) .
