View Full Version : Is it possible to deinterlace mixed content?

This week I purchased the World Rally Championship Review 2013 HD Download (http://www.dukevideo.com/prd4753ED/World-Rally-Championship-Review-2013-HD-Download). Almost 18GB of 1080p-content... I was really looking forward to it, but then there was quite a disappointing moment when I discovered the actual rally footage is interlaced! Inserted computer animations; stage times for instance are progressive though.
I don't have much experience with deinterlacers, but within AviSynth I've tried Bob, TDeint, Yadif, QTGMC and I believe some others, but all to no avail, at least not with the expected/desired result.
I've uploaded a 15sec sample (http://www.mediafire.com/download/uvs84hpoepsg4h4/WRC-2013-Sample.mkv) (m4v[h264+acc] muxed to mkv[h264+acc]). Am I out of luck, or does anyone know if AviSynth + some deinterlacer can show me some magic?

What is your expected/desired result and how does your actual result differ from that?
You can try TDeint with full=false, so that only interlaced frames are touched.

Frame 25 cropped of WRC-2013-Sample.mkv:

- Bob (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/9487444e3ea3660789a1db7b95647337.jpg)
- TDeint (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/cb55c6628ca435855eee7b3b3ed3d842.jpg)
- Yadif (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/68ce3a8a0f7b91af45d2ad754fc17dad.jpg)
- QTGMC (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/a7f92990a4d047360000d760c10715b3.jpg)
Perhaps I'm too spoiled with progressive content that I completely want to get rid of the jagged lines, but I have a feeling that's not gonna happen because of the speed the rally spectators are passing by.
TDeint(full=false) doesn't help.

Look at the separatefields(), just step through. Almost everything outside the car is nearly solid color blocks, and it appears to be field-blended. The encoding of this really wasn't done with much care.
You can give SRestore a try if it actually is field-blended, but I wouldn't hold out hope for a miracle. You won't get much detail out of it no matter what.

I've played with it a bit, but without any good results. I'll let it rest. Thanks for your help and info.

Garbage in, garbage out.

Wow, that is absolutely awful. The baked-in interlacing is the least of its worries, it's compressed into mush!

To be fair with those guys; the 18GB is divided into 4 parts and only the first 2 parts are interlaced. Part 3 and 4 are progressive, but although I wish they would've upped the bitrate (±5.5Mbit/s) a bit for 1080p content, the video looks pretty good.
