Does the resolution (800*600) (640*480) make any difference in video preformance when using the tv-out to play movies?
Does the picture get better in any of the modes?
Thanx...

Hi,
It depends on your tv. Most American and Japanese TV's have a max resolution of 640x480. Anything higher than that will not look any better.
Of course, the resolution of VCD's is 352x240, and VHS is only 256xXXX.
That's why DVD's look better than VHS....the resolution of a DVD is 512xXXX. Progressive scan dvd players output an incredible 1024xXXX resolution, but this obviously wouldn't make a difference on anything but a High Definition TV with a resolution of 1024xXXX
So the answer to your quesiton is no, not unless you have a High Defintion TV. If you have HDTV, you can raise the resolution of your output up to 1024xXXX, and your picture will look better. But for a regular TV, anything greater than 640x480 is a waste of space (for TV out viewings).
Keep in mind your computer monitor has a much higher resolution than your TV, so higher resolution movies will often look better on a computer monitor than a TV.

for a pal-tv i would suggest 800x600. it comes closest to the number of lines a pal-tv has ( 576 ).

OK, what the hell are you talking about? ALL DVDs are 720x480 R1 and 720x576 R2. It won't get any better if you play it at 800 x 600 or 8e10 x 6e10. And progressive scan players output in component video with progressive frames, they don't raise the resolution or any such crap. Know what you're talking about before you talk.

I'll tell you "what the hell" I'm talking about.
What I was trying to explain was the display on a standard tv. Of course the source resolution (on the dvd) of a dvd is 720x480, but is that the resolution shown on the tv?
No. The max horizontal lines of a standard tv is 512, therefore the picture is resized before it is displayed. The same way the picture is resized when you set your player to "full screen" on your pc monitor.
And of course a progressive scan doesn't raise the resolution of a dvd (it's set at 720x480). The OUTPUT of a progressive scan will display a picture on a HDTV of 1080 horizontal lines (again, you are right in saying it uses progressive frames to accomplish this).
Try reading my posts a little more carefully before you start insulting me.....
