XviD is a new codec, that is being currently developed.
It's still in alpha state, but already better (IMHO) than divx4.
You should first read doom9's codecs comparison

XviD is the codec like DivX..Download a compiled version from koepi's or nick's or umaniacs site and install it..Then you will see the XviD codes the doom9 says.

As I suppose you're rather new to encoding, some warning words must be spoken:

Unlike DivX4, XviD is in an experimental stage and it is not a commercial codec - this means there will be NO support , NO newbie-forum and NO documentation apart from the sticky posts on top of this page and Doom9's guide! But there will be new and intersting bugs and problems (and no-one will have sympathy if you complain too much about this). You'll definitely have an easier life using DivX4...

If, on the other hand, this sounds OK for you - have fun and welcome! We're all crash test dummies and exchanging our experiences... ;) [Very sophisticated crash test dummies, of course.]

Completely off-topic, but there's talk of creating a custom version of VDub solely for XviD encoding (or perhaps a totally new program from scratch).

This may be necessary, since "normal" AVI-producing programs (VDub, XMPEG, DVD2AVI, MPEG2AVI, etc.) won't be able to create XviD avi's which contain B-frames, though they will be able to play them back.

We'll see.

the tab still missing in VirtualDub

i followed the steps

maybe i applied the wrong file by using Avi Editor .dll

or i have 2 put that file in MEPG folder

To install XviD, you have to have the xvid.dll, xvid.ax and xvid.inf files in the same directory. Then right-click on the xvid.inf file, and select "Install". You should then be able to see it in VDub.

Sounds like that may only be the start of your troubles however :)
