I'm wondering how much of an improvement it would be over something like a Phenom II x4.
That's what I currently have in my capture rig, but I am looking into the possibility of upgrading. I was initially going to upgrade until I decided an i5 was the better bet for a general purpose machine, but at that time I wasn't set up for capturing and I have since re-purposed my AMD machine as an HTPC/Capture box.
Most specifically I am trying for a goal of being able to capture with x264vfw, using lossless or a very low CQP at a minimum of 1920x1080/60fps in real time.
Currently I can only go down to about CQP 16 with Ultrafast preset and converting to 4:2:0. I've done tests and 15 is passable for slower paced games but fast action will start overloading the CPU in some cases (briefly).
It doesn't HAVE to be lossless but it would be a nice goal. If I could at least get Lossless in 4:2:0. A CQP of 10 or better in at least 4:2:2 would be nice realistic goal though.
One of the Vishera CPU's with either 6 or 8 cores, under $200 is what I'm looking at spending money on. I never really intended for the Phenom II x4 to be more than a stop-gap and it would be nice to have another powerful encoding rig I could offload other things to as well.
If anyone has experience with the 6 or 8 core models and could give me some stats (or do some 1080p60 encoding tests and report FPS) it would be appreciated.
