Hi,

I was wondering what is a good lossless (or near lossless) codec for video games capture.

Correct me if i'm wrong:
Lagarith is best for compression but requires a lot of resources.
Ut video seems the best compromise between compression and cpu usage.
What about FFV1 ?
any other interesting codecs ?

For the choice of color space. Should i choose BT.601 YUV420 over RGB or YUV422 ? (i have the darker video issue with BT.701)
I would have no problem to edit the clips in editing software such as Adobe Premiere ?
atm i use Dxtory with Ut video BT.601 YUV420.

when all clips are edited to create the final video. i encode it with MeGUI x264 automated 2 pass, Bitrate 8000 with slower preset. Are those settings correct for good quality and size output ? should i increase the bitrate or change other settings ?

Sorry for my english and thank you for the help. :thanks:

I have a bit similar and related question. It does not look like screen capturing is a popular topic on doom9. There is a nice thread here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=165745), but these results isn't something you can use to determine what [virtually] lossless codec to go for when comes to screen capture.

I'm curious if anyone ever did some screen capture speed tests with popular suitable codecs (FRAPS/dxtory/Lags/ut video)?

RGB, 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 depends on what you want to do with this file later. If you wan't to make eg x264 files than use 4:2:0.

You should use Rec.709.

MagicYUV and UTVideo are good.

I did [use search]
But I did not [found any actual and relevant info].

There was 5-6yo thread with MS codec but the results were scarce and not many screen capture codecs from nowadays were mentioned.

If you did not notice I'm not just talking about lossless codecs, I'm talking precisely about screen capture lossless encoders/codes (i.e. fraps dxtory etc) or fast codecs suitable for it.

UT Codec or MagicYUV are your best choices.
