View Full Version : Intel HD Graphics 4600 banding/posterization (EVR / Win 7)

Has anyone else noticed that the Intel HD Graphics 4600 have banding and posterization in the output when converting color spaces via EVR?

I have an old Dell FP2001 connected via DVI to the HD4600 graphics in a i7-4770k running Windows 7 SP1 that I use for video processing/compression. I spent a lot of time getting upset at why I couldn't get smooth color gradients (in real video content) from x264 when checking the output no matter what encoder settings I used (even lossless) when the Lagarith compressed intermediate AVI files looked flawless. I've been using MPC-HC 1.71 (32-bit and 64-bit) with the EVR (custom presenter) to play back the files for quality checking. There was obvious banding and posterization when I played back the x264 encoded files. After screwing around with x264 settings, debanding, adding grain, and other stuff in AVIsynth for about a week without being able to eliminate the banding I eventually discovered that the problem had nothing to do with x264, and everything to do with Intel's drivers. I had been using the initial release Haswell HD4600 drivers (05/17/2013 - 9.18.10.3186 / 15.31.11.64.3186). They ended up driving me nuts. I downloaded and installed the latest drivers (11/27/2013 -10.18.10.3345 / 15.33.8.64.3345) and they are better, but still have some less obvious banding / posterization and definitely aren't perfect. They aren't nearly as good as MadVR which looks flawless on the same gradients (using the same monitor and the HD4600's output), or another PC I have (Nvidia GTX 650 under XP) which also produces flawless looking gradients during playback.

FWIW, the banding/posterization in the output is there on both limited and full video level setting in the Intel driver control panel. Changing that setting has no impact on the gradients.

I plan to check the HD4400 in a Haswell i5-4300U for the same issue later tonight on my laptop.

So, with the 10/7/2013 - 9.18.10.3324 (device manager reported numbers) drivers the HD4400 in the i5-4300U (mobile Haswell) has the same banding / posterization as the desktop HD4600 with the 11/27/2013 -10.18.10.3345 / 15.33.8.64.3345 drivers.

Again, on the HD4400 madVR looks flawless.

Unfortunately I'm not able to take a screenshot with madVR (they just show up blank/black), so I can't give you a comparison (yet?).

Okay, I figured out why the madVR screenshots were blank and got that fixed. Here's the same frame with madVR.

Intel likes to enable some of its video post-processing features in the driver by default. Did you check the driver control panel in the video section, and disable all these "enhancements"?
madVR works in a way to ignore these things, while with EVR they get applied.

madVR works in a way to ignore these things, while with EVR they get applied.In the Video section of the HD Graphics Control Panel everything is turned off or set to the nominal values (brightness, contrast, etc). As I mentioned in my first post the intermediate lossless YV12 Lagarith AVI plays without banding using EVR, but it connects to the EVR using ARGB32 not NV12. Hence my comment about color space conversion. That may not be a completely correct assignment of blame though because if the video is being scaled (not displayed 1:1) and I use madVR + DXVA image upscaling & image downscaling there is some slight banding / posterization (less than plain EVR though) that isn't there with the custom pixel shader code (internal madVR routines).

Are you certain you found all the settings? They are kinda hidden.
You have to click on "Video" in the header, with the small arrow next to it. It opens a dropdown with new sub-menus.

For me, in Video -> Image Enhancement -> Advanced -> Noise Reduction was turned on by default (turn off by using "Application Settings")

Well, I didn't see those settings or realize they even existed, so I'm not certain that they're turned off. I will check them when I'm home from work.So, it turns out it's the Contrast Enhancement option in the driver's control panel (highlighted with a red box) that causes the banding. :angry:

Once I set it to Off the banding went away.

Haha i got trolled by this control panel too ;) Seriously i wonder again every day about that genius who designed metro and all the plague that comes with it, so youre not alone ;)

Yeah, it sucks. I haven't a clue why the drivers default to image quality ruining settings either, but I'm sure it made sense to someone at Intel.
