MPC-HC Green Screen with The Hobbit (1) Bluray MKV Rip

Hi folks,

I'm seeing something odd and wondering how to troubleshoot.

I just ripped the bluray of The Hobbit (vol 1: The Unexpected Journey) to MKV with MakeMKV. It completed with no problems.

However, MPC-HC on my desktop gives a green screen when I try to play the file. Sound plays, just green video. I see the same problem whether I use the x64 or x86 version of MPC-HC 1.71, using either EVR-CP, Sync, or MadVR renderers. I've tried reinstalling using reset settings and still see the green screen.

On this computer, VLC (2.1.2) plays the same file just fine, as does Windows Media Center via MediaBrowser 3 Classic (LAV instead of windows media foundation) or TMT5. So, there's nothing wrong with the file.

The odd thing is that my HTPC downstairs seems to play the file fine in MPC-HC (x64, using Sync renderer). Both computers are Win7x64 SP1, both AMD processors with ATI graphics cards (HTPC: 5670, Desktop: 4550).

I can't explain why MPC-HC won't play the file on my desktop PC...

Is there any troubleshooting I can do to explore it? I've never had this problem before.

I poked around some more... the file plays fine on my desktop in MPC-HC if I use either the EVR (not EVR-CP) or Video Mixing Renderer (9). Go figure...

Go to LAV Video Filter settings and disable either YV12 or NV12 and try. Looks like a GFX driver bug to me.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went in, unchecked BOTH of them, applied, restarted MPC-HC, checked that they remained unchecked, and ran the file again. Still green screen.

Agree, the big difference between the two systems is that I'm using the ATI 4xxx card with the "Legacy" driver ATI puts out for it, versus an up to date AT 5xxx card in the HTPC. Probably that's it. Just weird, is all, since I've never seen this ever before on any video file, and nothing looks odd about this MKV rip.

Try to use LAV sw decoder (set hardware decoder to "None")

Ahah! That did it... setting hardware decoder to None allowed the file to play in EVR-CP.

It's odd, because this is the first file I've ever had this trouble with, and it's unclear to me why THIS file (AVC, nothing special as far as I can tell) barfs when hundreds of others played without incident.

But, clearly I'll need to upgrade my video card if this kind of thing starts happening more often. At least it plays fine on my HTPC with the 5670 card. :D
