Q: Where's the Flask / Xmpeg FAQ?
A: http://www.doom9.org/flask-faq.htm
Q: Where can I find more DivX related FAQs?
A: http://www.doom9.org/faqs.htm
Q: What is the difference between FlaskMpeg and Xmpeg?
A: Xmpeg is based on FlaskMpeg 0.6 but enhances it in some ways: new resizing filters, auto cropping, input and output DAR selection, multipass capabilities, DivX4 2 pass support and a new interface. Only Xmpeg 4.3 will support deinterlace again and that version is not out yet.
Q: I get a "this program has created an error and has to be closed" error. What to do?
A: Use GKnot instead. Flask/Xmpeg is known to be very problematic.
Q: Should I use AVI output or OpenDML output?
A: OpenDML output allows you to write AVIs larger than 2GB but there appears to be a problem with the audio player. Normalizing and DRC settings are not applies if you use OpenDML output so your audio will be awfully quiet. So I suggest to use AVI output.
Q: Which resize filter to use?
A: The bicubic filter gives the sharpest image, the default one (Bressenham) is a good compromise between beeing too crisp (= a lot of blocks visible) and beeing too smooth (image appears all "washed out").
Q: Can I use VBR MP3 in Flask/Xmpeg?
A: No. You have to extract the audio to a separate WAV file and encode that to a VBR MP3, then mux audio and video in Nandub. GKnot is a much better solution if you want VBR audio.
Q: Can I use SmartRipper, vStrip or cladDVD to rip the DVD when using Flask/Xmpeg?
A: Sure, however you will have to load the VOB files instead of the IFO and you cannot get subtitles.
Q: Flask/Xmpeg crashes somewhere in the encoding process. What to do?
A: Make sure your VOB files are okay by playing them in a software player like WinDVD or PowerDVD. If they're okay switch to GKnot.
Q: Why do you mention GKnot that often?
A: Because it's lightyears better than Flask/Xmpeg but only slightly more complicated to use.
Q: Where do I get more info about GKnot?
A: The official homepage is http://gknot.doom9.org/
