Don't know if this request is accepted here or not.

I had a fun time playing with avs scripts and x264 (about 2~3 years ago actually). Since then, I have not any more experience of new technique or updated knowledge etc.

Recently, as the new h265 standard comes out, as well as other new codec like VP9, Daala, my interest in video encoding comes back, but more seriously, I would like to engage in researching about them, especially VP9 and both h265 (of course).

I would like to ask any experts/researchers here some advice about where I should start from, and papers I should read firstly, knowledge I should know first etc... Just forget that I once knew about thing called x264 and start freshly.

All advices are wellcome.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks.

I have read that thread already, not that much. And i realize that I lack of so much base knowledge. That why I would like to have some advice about "where to start".

For example why YUV 4:2:0 but not other (at least in h264 8bits).

...when you don't understand something, Google it or search Wikipedia. If you read something there that you don't understand, search again. Repeat until you *can* understand what you are reading, then take what you have learned and return to the more advanced topic. It's an endless process.
