23.976p NTSC DVD - playback issues on LCD TVs with 24p mode

We're having problems with playback of a 23.976p DVD on a Sony and Toshiba TV that have a 24p display mode. We're getting a brief flash (often black, sometimes a 'ghost' image) between each separate piece of video when the '24p display' mode is forced to ON for the Sony TV and we've had similar reports from somebody using a Toshiba TV. The TV's information display it's reporting all video as '24p'. This happens on all our DVD/BD players.

We don't get any flashes for a 23.976p Blu-ray or for a PAL 25p DVD. If we re-encode the menus as 29.97p, we no longer get flashes between menus, but we do when jumping into to 23.976p video.

Any ideas? Is it something to do with the pulldown?

Yep, you should be. 23.976p is not an acceptable frame rate for DVD.

With 23.976 video there has to be soft-pulldown applied to the MPEG2 video before authoring (during encoding or afterwards using DGPulldown (http://neuron2.net/dgpulldown/dgpulldown.html)).

So then it's not 23.976 but 29.97fps... BINGO

soft-pulldown... No just Pulldown. Change the frame rate from ### to ###

Using DGPulldown to make mpeg2 video DVD compliant for authoring chances (Flags) the video fps from 23.976 to 29.97##... so it's not 23.976 any more.

When your player and TV see that video... it sees 29.97fps

But, ironically (sort of), some (all?) modern TVs will detect the pattern of repeated fields, undo it, and give you your 23.976 video back.
