It looks like AMD being introduce new things in their last Media SDK (http://developer.amd.com/community/blog/2013/11/11/media-sdkv1-0-beta-release/), including hevc...

yet another shitty implementation? we all know how it looks with hardware h.264 vs x264.

I think the news is mainly about decoding (if this is about Kaveri/Beema, then that is sooner than expected, IMHO). Although no doubt that at some point, the chips will get some encoding hardware too, that's just how stuff is these days.

Edit: oh wait, this is cloud stuff, so encoding indeed. Well still, let's hope that this means decoding offload for the consumers APUs, too.

@Atak_Snajpera:

You're probably right - this will likely be a "reference" GPU implemenation. However, don't write off GPU encoders. Elemental Technologies has done an amazing job of this with H.264 (and is currently doing public testing of H.265) on their nVidia powered Elemental Live and Elemental Server transcoders.

The overall quality is lower than x264 on low settings, but the quality is quite comparable at high speed settings, and it destroys pure software encoders in terms of density. It's not the right fit for everyone, but it's a great implementation.

Folks,
Please note that AMD Media SDKv1.0 does not support HEVC encode/decode.

Stay tuned for further developments on HEVC from AMD.
