View Full Version : BD Authoring without reencoding from HDTV file

Hi,
I would like to author some BDs (with menu) from HDTV files (generally H264, 1080i), recorded in my case from air TV.
I know these files are not (generally) Blu-Ray compliant but some Blu-Ray hardware players can play them (in the BD structure) without problems: this behavior saves me to re-encode these HDTV files (many hours of re-encoding).
The problem is that many blu-ray authoring programs (I use TMPGENC Authoring Works 5 or Adobe Encore) want to re-encode these files (correctly).
As little trick I am trying to use a 60sec version of HDTV files (to minimize re-encoding's time) in authoring program and "inoculating", in bd structure so created, .m2ts/.mpls/.cpi created from tsmuxer and based on original HDTV files.
Seems works but it's a very long work: do you have an easier solution?
Thanks in advance

The TSMuxer trick is what I was going to suggest... I do that all the time with HDTV source video/audio. It may not be 'spec compliant', but I know _my_ Blu-ray player will play them, so that's all I care about... :)

I don't know what this means, but when I have wanted to make BD discs from my TiVo OTA recordings, I use VideoReDo to edit them and then output as Elementary Streams, whereupon it's a simple matter with tsMuxeR to mux to BD. No re-encoding.

Right, but I want to create BD disc with menu (also with pop-up menu): for example to have a menu it's better if I insert into single disc multiple episodes of multiple TV series.

1080i is perfectly compatible with blu-ray standard, most likely it is setting in encore which you have chosen causing it to encode or it could be frame rate of source files. Without more info on source files it is hard to say what it is encoding them.

Sorry, I missed the "menu" part, maybe MultiAVCHD might work for this; myself I use Ulead MF6+ and sometimes have access to Sony DVD Architect. OTTOMH I think that at least in the USA all OTA signals are BD-compliant. Maybe walexago you might get better help if you explain your recording method, with examples e.g. MediaInfo or some such of your recordings.

Based on my knowledge, to be BD compliant implies to use closely any blu-ray restrictions like video resolution, video and audio encoder, and many others encoder's parameters (see for example www.x264bluray.com), like GOP, slices, vbv-bufsize, profile level, references frames and so on.
My HDTV files are (typically) 1920x1080i@25fps (I live in Italy), AVC video encoder, audio may be stereo or AC3 5.1: until now these specs are BD-compliant.
But others H264 encoding parameters are not and blu-ray authoring programs like Encore or TAW5 checks also these parameters to ensure blu-ray compatibility.
Mediainfo doesn't shows these encoder parameters: however here some info about video stream (I recorded this through EyeTV, on my Mac, but it's same if I record with DVBViewer inside Windows):

I used MultiAVCHD, it's very great for many things but it's poor as menu capabilities.

I think its menu capabilities are pretty good... for free.
You can use stills or motion menus with audio.
Button options are limited though. :(
It's a shame deank has not continued with updates.

I agree, MultiAVCHD it's a great program but menu's authoring is limited (no multiple page, no seamless, buttons too limited).
If only deank came back to develop it, could become a very complete authoring tool.

I too would welcome this! :)

I use tsMuxer and/or MultiAVCHD for my HDTV recordings off satellite.
