View Full Version : My ripped VOB files are too short

I ripped a DVD using DVD Decrypter. No error messages and the file sizes are correct. But when I check the information on the VOBs length they are far too short. I should be getting around 22 minutes per file, but for most of them I'm getting less than 5 minutes per file.

Not only that, but when I try to edit the files in OpenShot (I'm dual booting), the first few minutes of the file will be brought in, but then the majority of the clip is missing with about a minute of the end being appended. The same problem happens in Windows Media Player.

I'm pretty frustrated at this point and I could use some answers.

What DVD? DVD decrypter is pretty outdated and may not be able to handle the copy protection scheme used on that movie.

The DVDs were released in 2004. I'll try something newer and report back.

Edit: used DVD Smith Movie Backup, still no luck.

Again, what DVD?

Again, what DVD?

A television series called Silverwing.

Sorry for the double post, but I've looked over all of the files and I noticed something strange. It's only the first four or five files that are having the problem I described; all the other ones are the correct length.

Have you tried AnyDVD?

Have you tried AnyDVD?

No. I will try that though and see if it works.

Tried AnyDVD and CloneDVD2, still no success.

Post a screenshot of the VOBs directory with details enabled and say which one(s) causes the problem.

The black box are the files that are cut short.

Open VTS_01_1.VOB in DGIndex. Hit F5 to play it. Is all the video there?

Yes. All the video is there.

Then you should have no problem processing the DVD with DGIndex/DGDecode. The files appear to be fine.

What are you trying to do with this DVD?

I'm trying to edit some of the film into a montage with some music.

Go ahead and do it with DGIndex/DGDecode and forget that some applications get the length wrong.

The problem you appear to have is (again) the lack of the IFO files. It is not an issue (or may not be one) now, but if you intend to do something with the VOBs you might need them.

Try re-ripping your original discs with good ol' DVD Shrink instead of DVD Decrypter...

The files are fine, it is not a ripping issue.

Maybe the OP is under the impression that the video length of the episodes indicated in the "Length" column of Windows Explorer is real.

I'm having a similar problem when I use DGIndex when I demux the video. They're still coming out too short when I view them in VLC Media Player or try to edit them in OpenShot. Even though DGIndex itself lists the correct length before demuxing. I'll try ripping the IFO files as well and see if that will work.

I've found the solution. I've been able to convert them to mpeg files which are read at the correct length on OpenShot. Thank you for your time everyone, sorry if I came off as a stupid person.

Still, maybe his application OpenShot just can't function correctly with the files, and if converting them to MPEG solves things, then we should all rejoice.:)

You'll only get nonsense results for length if you open an elementary MPEG-2 stream in a media player.

No they're not.

My mpeg2 tv rips cut with cuttermaran and muxed into mpgs with imago mpeg muxer are always 1/2 of the length when I view them with VLC.

He's talking about M2Vs. And they don't show exactly half the length. MPGs should show the correct length, but I don't use Cuttermaran and don't know if it's somehow responsible. I do use Imago MPEG-2 Muxer from time to time and never had that problem.
