View Full Version : HD sound (DTS-MA/TrueHD) over DVI on AMD card

So since it is not 'allowed' to keep discussing the problem I have in the madVR topic I will open a new thread to see if I can make things work with you guys help.

Here s the deal:
I have a AMD HD7950 (Club3D Royal King) graphics card. The card has 1 HDMI output, 2x DVI output and 2x display port output. I use the HDMI output to feed my 4K display device (sony VPL-VW1000ES projector). The HDMI output needs to go DIRECTLY to my projector. It cannot go through my AVR because my AVR does not support 4K passthrough (only up to 2K). So I connected the HDMI output of the HD7950 directly to the Sony 4K projector and configured the AMD control panel to output 3840x2160. This works perfect and my 4K projector shows that it is receiving the 4K signal perfect.

So far so good.

Now what I also want is to have my AVR get HD sound. So in the first place I bought a universal DVI to HDMI adapter and tried both DVI outputs of the HD7950. No sound. With the help of you guys I looked at the site of Club3D and found out this adapter from Club3D:

So I bought this adapter today hoping that this would give my HD sound on my AVR. Unfortunately I get the same result as with the universal adapter I tried. When I connect the adapter to the DVI output (tried both of course) of the card and put a HDMI=>HDMI cable in the adapter and connect it to the HDMI input of my AVR I get a notification as you can see in this picture (zoom in to be able to read the message):

You can also see in the next 2 screenshots that my 4K projector says DTV, HDMItm while the TX-NR818 (which is my AVR) says DTV,DVI. Isn t the AVR supposed to be saying HDMI instead of DVI?

So....... something is going wrong here. I know that Club3D also has a miniDP to HDMI active adapter which I could use for connecting my 4K display to (and that way I will have the native HDMI output of the HD7950 free to connect this to my AVR) but this active adapter is pretty expensive compared to the DVI=>HDMI adapter so I would like to see if I can make that work before trying something else.

There was also a suggestion to enable the on-board HDMI of my motherboard but I tried to make my Intel GPU (which has the HDMI output) work while also using the HD7950 but this does not work.

Then there was another suggestion to use a HDMI splitter and do:
gpu -> hdmi -> splitter -> avr
splitter -> Sony
But a HDMI splitter can give problems too from what I ve read.

Maybe you guys can help me make HD audio work with my config (HD7950 DVI output => official Club3D DVI to HDMI adapter => HDMI cable => AVR HDMI input)

Since the HD2000 series for AMD and the 200 series for Nvidia.

But is it 100% sure this is dts-ma that is supported, that s the question. Because it somehow is not working with me as you csn read and see in the screenshots i posted

use your hd2000 for audio and your amd für video this should work easily.

i don't use an avr ( i use an asus essence st with headphones) i can't reproduce the problem.

but a passive adapter works like there is no dvi at all cause only hdmi information are send.

at least this works 100 % fine with my monitors and my tv i can't test bitstreming but realy this should work too because bitstreaming needs less mbit as pcm audio... and the cable doesn't care... at least this works fine with my nvidia 760.

and i got 4 audio devices in my audio panel with nvidia hdmi and i only have 1 hdmi 1 dp 2dvi so every connection can work as a audio source and most likely all at the same time too. the fakt that my 760 supports surround 4k means you should be able to use your dvi -> hdmi cable with your beamer and still get k at 30 fps. else amd does a bad work yet again X-)

so to make sure this works i try the same adapter tomorrow at my tv with my htpc on a hd6770.

edit: btw i can't read anythink on these screenshoot

You need to use an ATi DVI-HDMI adapter. A generic one will probably not work. AMD changed their drivers recently so that only the adapters than come with your GPU work. Try LightShot (http://app.prntscr.com/) to grab your screen captures. I also can't read a single thing in those screenies

You can use Alt-PrintScreen combination key to capture the active window part only... Then paste it into MS-Paint with Ctrl-V.

I am surprised this method is not so well-known. :p

If it does not work, ATi/AMD might go into big troubles with his OEM customers. :p

Of course inside the GPU driver it can maintain a big database to see if the adapter's EEPROM content is a legal one. To prevent HDCP related trobules from unauthorized customers (i.e. not pay $$$ to HDMI...), ATi needs to design a complex verification procedure in the driver.


Just took a test with regular DVI-to-HDMI cable from my Lantic HD7970 to Sony TV, and it does not show audio capability. Only the card's HDMI port does. I guess it will still work on HDMI port with HDMI-to-DVI + DVI-to-HDMI daisy-chained cables. :p

For the card HDMI connector function, I guess there should be a default HDMI mode setting in the card's BIOS for GPU driver to check, or such EEPROM is also wired on HDMI connector port.

Thanks for all your replies guys. I don t know if I made it clear enough but i DID bought and tried the original DVI=>HDMI adapter from Club3D. This one:

This simply DOES NOT give me HD audio. All HD audio devices in the sound properties are not active (check my screenshots). So what I need to find out is WHY this is not working and HOW i can fix it......

Have you reported this issue to Club 3D? It is this company's responsibility to make it work since the Ad. of his product claims such function.

Maybe the problem is from the new Catalyst driver ... if it indeed blocks some mis-matched adapters even with the EEPROM.

Just have another idea... Did you try to see if it allows 4K resolution mode --- if connected in this way? :p

HD7950 DVI ==> Club3D DVI-to-HDMI ==> HDMI-to-HDMI cable ==> sony VPL-VW1000ES

or

HD7950 DVI ==> DVI-to-HDMI cable ==> sony VPL-VW1000ES


Personally I think the 1st one has higher chance to work if GPU driver enables HDMI 1.4a function on this port and allows 4K resolution mode... If not, it is still most likely Club3D adapter's compatibility issue.

Just tried what you suggested pie but in both situations I get max 1650x1080 (or something like that, not behind pc atm)
