View Full Version : Transcoding a video stream to 98%?

Hello,

I have a small question.
I want to back up my Get Carter DVD to DVD-R.
First I ripped it to movie only but it's still to big.
So I'll have to transcode the video stream.
After the calculations I came up with a reduction factor of 98%.
The only problem is that ReMPEG2 only supports up to 90% (I think).

So does anyone know a way to reduse it to 98% since I want the highest possible quality.

Thanks to all the doom9 guides because without them I wouldn't have gotten even this far :)!

And thanks for any replys.

rempeg only the first vob file...and NONE of the others.

Won't thatgive a big quality bump when the vob's change while playing the movie?

i set the reduction rate to 50% and limit the max bitrate to 5000.
i see no noticeable difference.

I still am looking for a way to reduce dvd vob's to more than 90% of their original size.
I ripped as much as possible but it still is a little to big :(
I think it's weird that there's only a reduction factor of max 90% in rempeg.
Isn't there another way?

chumboy -

How do you rempeg the firs VOB only?>?? What do you use to Demux/Remux the VOB???

This may help me to sort out my problems with Hercules....

Looking forward to the reply

rempeging the first vob file at 50% (5000 limit) will take the size of the first vob down to a little above 50% in size.
then remux with old first vob. this creates a new first vob that you can then work through ifoedit.

Chum - sorry to sound daft mate...but how do I just remux one VOB with IFO edit or is it automatic??

My concern is that Ifo edit will try to strap the single vob video across all files noted in the IFO...

Am i bein stupid here or is it an automatic process?

(P.S. If I am bein stupid then please refer to me as a plonker :-) ) but only this once....

grog...

rempeg2:
analyze only the vts_0x_1.vob file
set reduction to 50%
set limit bitrate to 5000
720x480
progressive
match source

go

move vts_0x_1.vob, vts_0x_1.ifo and rempeg2.m2v files to new directory.
open the _1.ifo file in ifoedit, vob extras, select the rempeg2.m2v file, destination directory will be the directory where all the other original vob's are stored. leave all checkboxes as they are.
go

move _1.ifo back into the directory will all the vob files.

open _1.ifo in ifoedit, vob extas, unselect remux, select "create new ifo's", destination directory will be VIDEO_TS. go.

open new _1.ifo in ifoedit and get vts sectors.

i'm having problems remuxing right now and haven't figured out my particular problem. the above is from another guide i got on this forum. i've done it 3 times successfully, but am having a hard time with 3 Bond flicks.

let me know how you come out.

OK I tried what you said on the extra's of The Crow III Chumboy.
But when I rempeg to 50% the picture loss is very noticeable!
I heard CinemaCraft Encoder gives very good picture quality.
Are there any guides out there for CCE that are as good as Doom9's guides?
And can I recreate VOB's after working with CCE?

Thanks again for the replys.

Da Silva - If you only need to lose 2% of the total length then Rempeg the first Vob at something around 85% using FULL as the search def - This `Should` reduce it enough and give u good quality too....

U may need to reduce the ratio marginally or increase it dependant on the exact Mb reduction you require...

Thanks I'll give it a try!

Do you have any idea what all the options mean and do at the Search Techniques?
Like you say to put it to full but what's the diffrence with Prediction?
And should I have Half Pel marked or not.
Sorry for so many questions but I'm kinda new into all of this :o)

The problems I had with transcoding the video stream is that sometimes the picture get's garbled when there is alot of action going on.
