Might not be the right place to ask, but I'm not sure where might be more appropriate.

Through the years, using BD-Rebuilder doing Alt Movie Only backups to MKV files. My playback devices have been LG BD390 and BD570 bluray players. They can connect to CIFS file shares (windows shared folders), navigate, and play the MKV files natively, without re-encoding, transcoding or DLNA needed. Since my receiver (Pioneer Elite VSX-21) only supports 5.1, I have my BD's set for SPDIF=DTS Re-Encode, and I get DTS or DD5.1 audio from all movies that have better than stereo audio tracks.

Now I'm looking for a player for an additional TV in the house. I would like it to be as easy to setup and use as these LG's, and not use DLNA. I'd like to keep it $150 and under if possible. If it can include Amazon Instant video and Netflix, thats a plus.

I'm against DLNA due to how the playback using my Sony TV's (KDL-40w5100, and KDL55HX750), and PS3 work using Serviio and PS3 Media Server.

Is anyone else playing back Alt Movie Only backups? If so, what player are you using, would you recommend it, and why?

Thanks!

Having gotten tired of constantly running updates and fixing problems with our HTPCs, we now watch most of our backups through Roku boxes via the Plex channel. Works very well!

If you're already streaming media around the house, that proves that your network connection is sturdy enough to handle it. And Roku offers several different models so you can buy exactly what you need.

Plus you just can't beat the sheer volume of streaming channels available. If you don't require disc playback, it's my highest recommendation--we sure love ours!
