View Full Version : Splitting MP4/M4V Video in AVIDemux

For those who watch videos on their PS3, you know MKV container by default is not supported. There's a tool called MKVToMP4 which fixes this by repacking the content into a compatible container. The only drawback to the PS3's support for USB Flash drives (for playing videos) is it only supports FAT32 and not NTFS. So if a video is larger than 4gb it's not supported.

Can you split an MP4/M4V in AVIDemux to where it maintains its compatability for PS3?

Keep in mind that MP4 natively doesn't support AC3.

So if you have an MKV with AC3 audio, although you can mux that AC3 into .MP4 as so called "private streams" there's a high chance that the audio won't be playable anyway.

You should be able to split an MP4 anywhere as long as it's at a key frame.
If the full file is playable on PS3, a file split in 2 will also be.

This is not true (anymore). That said, the PS3 simply does not support AC3 in mp4. I does in m2ts, though.

Another way (instead of splitting) to work around the FAT32 limitation of the PS3 would be to use a different file system (ext2/ext3) or stream over a network.

Can you elaborate "This is not true (anymore)"???

It was added to the official codecs list some years ago, though I don't know how comprehensive the spec is about it.

I think the PS3 doesn't support any filesystem other than FAT32 for USB drives. So, if you absolutely must get around the 4Gb limitation, indeed you 'll have to either stream over a local network or convert it to BDMV/m2ts and burn in to Bluray disc or maybe BD9. I just prefer to split the video with avidemux :)

PS: You can easily convert an MKV to MP4 (with AAC sound) using avidemux (assuming the video in the MKV is H.264 of course which it probably is). Since you are not touching the video, conversion shouldn't take long.

Another solution to avoid burning when the video has a standard resolution is to make an AVCHD with multiAVCHD and put it on a hard drive or USB key in Fat32, you just have to tick split in 4 GB parts in multiAVCHD and you won't see the cuts (like vob on dvd's). You have to choose Sony PS3 in the solid media part after clicking start ;

It's also playable on some Oppo and Sony standalone players.
