View Full Version : Ultra-HD Blu-ray - looks like we'll be seeing 100gb discs

I'm surprised - I thought we'd see HEVC used with existing BD50s:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Details.aspx?NewsId=37859
SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES developed a new replication line under the product name BLULINE III for the manufacturing of triple-layer Blu-ray Discs with a storage capacity of 100 GB.
The triple-layer Blu-ray Discs with 100 GB storage capacity, is the preferred playback medium for the new 4K technology.
This is the first public confirmation of an actual BD4K format that I'm aware of.
I wonder if we'll be able to use AVC at a higher level, or if Ultra HD content will require the use of HEVC.
On top of that, now that Sonic/Rovi are out the game, I wonder if any companies will be offering "goodwill" upgrade paths for authoring tools for the extended format.

I thought this as well!
I wonder when we'll get a BDA announcement - CES 2014? - and are we all going to have to use Blu print or DoStudio :p

Since 100GB BD-R blanks (Pioneer/Verbatim 43789/43790) and writers (Pioneer BDR-207EBK) have become publicly available
(Pioneer writers are there since 1 year now with triple/quad layer capability, and quad layer 128GB blanks are already in the tube)
I was betting for an extension to the existing H.264 specs on BD-XL
that would allow for 12cm optical discs to deliver 3D2K or 2D4K or 2D2K48fps at appropriate bitrates.
They would not develop an optical disc system for plain data storage, would they ?
It is all possible, to be expected and not such a big step from the existing Blu-ray Spec base.
And what else should be feeding Sonys 4K TFTs ? The available 19Mbps broadcast bandwidth is not sufficient.
H.265 will take a good while to get mature, I guess,
and the benefit in possible H.265 bitrate reduction at same quality seems not worth the huge encoding times at the moment.
But of course as always future will tell.
(Sony seem willing to evolve, quite different from Rovi's goodnight to discs.
Sony DVD-A Pro 6 can mux 3D BD if you bring in MVC encodes from Sony Vegas 12.
All to be had for less than 600 Euros. And I seem to like optical discs...)

The dual layer are already problematic. I am expecting 3 or 4 layers to be even more, in particular with recordables.
Since the installed player base must nevertheless be changed, nothing speaks against a new medium maybe with a new laser colour (how about pink? :) it would please the Barbie-addicted consumers).

Does anyone use BD-R drives for computer data - other than those of us working on BDMV discs?

I do, however one I use can hold 128GB of data per disc at cost of rough value at $ 45.99 and that was on sale few days at amazon.

It uses standard blue with more power :)
