View Full Version : Salvage a damaged VOB from scratched DVD

I am trying to back up a slightly damaged DVD. DVDShrink complains about a CRC error and won't have anything to do with it, but since the DVD is not encrypted, I managed to get most of the content out of the DVD as it is only the last 2.7MB or so that VOB is unreadable.

As Windows won't copy the a file partially, I am now trying two applications to copy the file and ignore the error. The second app, Roadkil's unstoppable copier is still trying to extract the file (taking forever, I guess it tries each sector many times before giving up and moving to the next). The first application, CD Recovery Toolbox Free, probably work on the same principle (but faster) managed to extract the VOB, but it is corrupted to the extent that MPC-HC crash when trying to open it.

I do not expect a perfect fix and I can live with some corruption or even cutting out those last 2.7MB (which is probably just credit anyway), but what is a good patch to this problem and ensure an output that is DVD compliant? Thanks.

I think there is another free application, ISOpuzzle, that uses probably the same principle, yet further developed - you may use other units to read the missing parts. Sometimes it works as no drive is alike another and one can read what the other one couldn't and vice-versa. I remember that the German magazine c't also provided a free tool whose name escapes me right now that uses exactly the same principle as isopuzzle.

I've got great success with h2cdimage (from the c't quys Ghitulescu mentioned)
Equipped with three different DVD readers I was able to recover
some badly destroyed discs in the past where other recovery tools failed.
Sorry, I think the readme for H2cdimage is only in german.
Maybe the net will give a translation..
